My husband and I are beginning to research a trip to Tuscany for June 2007.
We would like to rent a car and find a good city from which to take day
trips out of and also find a place to rent while we are there. Any
recommendations for a charming but reasonably priced location for us to use
as a base for exploring Tuscany? Thank you.

We had good luck in Catellina in Chianti -- partway between Siena and
Florence; convenient to both.
We stayed at Collelungo (http://www.collelungo.com/), a comforable
villa, and did a lot of driving around Tuscany.

Tuscany is very varied, and there is a lot more than the much exploited
Chianti district.
If you want to scout around I would advice you not to stay in one place
only since you would end up missing so many alternative possibilities.
First, get yourself a detailed map (TCI 1/200000) and let us know if
you want to visit cities, spas, the usual touristic cities, small towns
scatterd in the countryside, if you like to stay near the cosat o close
by the mountains.
