There's no railway to Ullapool. I would have thought the only way to do
Inverness to Lewis and back in a day would be to fly.

There is supposed to be a Scottish Tourist Board but they changed their name
to something that sounds like a bus company so that you can't find it on the
web.
Good tourist organisations monitor news groups but the burocrats in
Edinburgh are an embarrasment
Try 'soc culture scotland' they are friendly!

It's not something I would consider doing in one day. Here's a URL which
may help you decide -

This URL seems to answer most of your queries -
http://www.scotland-inverness.co.uk/ullapool.htm
From other pages on this site:
Day trip to the Isle of Lewis: On Wednesdays and Fridays from end June to
end August you can get the 9.30am ferry from Ullapool and join a coach tour
at Stornoway taking you to the Callanish standing stones, Carloway Broch and
Arnol Black House. You then get time in Stornoway and leave at 7.15pm and
reach Ullapool at approximately 9.55pm. Cost of combined Ullapool/Lewis
ferry/coach tour ticket is 24.80 pounds (2002 prices). Coach connections are
available from Inverness early in the morning and to take you back there at
night - check the Scottish Citylink timetables and prices. Tickets should be
purchased before 5pm the day before (from the ferry office in Inverness
tourist office).
Loganair/British Airways operate flights to/from Stornoway, Barra,
Benbecula, Inverness, Glasgow, London and other destinations Monday -
Saturday. Limited Sunday flights.
Highland Airways operate an 18-seater Island Hopper service linking Glasgow
and Inverness with Stornoway and Benbecula (Monday-Saturday).

Try also the smaller circles a couple of miles SE of Calais at Gearraidh na
h-Aibhne (Garynahine).
If you didn't already know, the Sabbath is observed very strictly in most of
the Western Isles.
