Travel Inn.

I like the one near Waterloo Station, London. Great Location and some
with a view of the river.

Most of the major international chains like Howard Johnson,
Comfort Inn, Days Inn and Express by Holiday Inn

Look also at

Travel Inn
Road Chef

All at around a max of £50 per room, often with rather cheaper offers.

If you go the Travel Inn group, remember Breakfast is not included but
additional.

I found B& B's the way to go and if you go and www.google.com
for "bed & breakfast England" you should get lots of hits.
They include breakfast and we never paid over 50 GBP's for a double
anywhere.

Only thing to watch is special events being on a weekend near where you want
to stay, may cause all to be booked.

Some of the ones we stayed at were on a farm and most enjoyable stay at
that.

If you cant find one by about 4pm then go to the various towns information
centres and they have ones they can book ....they charge a couple of quid
booking fee. Tell them what price you want to payand they look up their
book.
Some of the information centres are hard to find but ask people and they are
often in the middle of the town in a pedestrian area so its get out and
walk.

We didnt book ahead anywhere and only came close to sleeping under the
clouds near Nottingham on a Friday night when there was a big horse carnival
on at the weekend in the area.

and your getting an insight into the way of life you don't get at
a lodge. I would only use one if I need to crash out for a few
hours then drive on within minimum time lost from the motorway.

That would be a good idea. Somewhere where one could get a couple of hours
sleep and a shower and continue on the way. But paying about £50 for a
nights stay when you only want a few hours is a bit over the top!

You can also find many, many guest houses on Smoothhound:
http://www.s-h-systems.co.uk/. I booked a few very nice (and reasonably
priced) places there (and one not-so-nice place). I'm not sure if there's
a good way to tell which will be particularly nice or not, though.
