I need to go to poznan in may and then i was thinking of spending a
week in rome. what is the best way to get from poznan to rome? I
think an overnight train would be a fun adventure--
also, any advice re: how do airline deals work when you fly from USA
to one country and fly out from another?

It'd take around 24 hours to get to Rome from Poznan by train.
Example:
Depart Poznan 19:15
Arrive Berlin 22:14
Dep Berlin 23:51
Arr Munich 09:12
Dep Munich 09:30
Arr Rome 19:45
There are a number of ways to get there by train. You could go via
Vienna and Venice, Berlin and Milano, Berlin and Bologna etc etc.

Poznan, Poland is rather small city. I guess from Poznan take express
train to Berlin-Germany (about 150 miles west from Poznan) biggest
city and transportation center in this part of Europe. I guess from
Berlin you can catch easy express train to Rome.

You may also consider going by bus. They run almost every day, take about
24h and cost less than $70 US one way.

This is called an 'open jaw'. A->B, C->A. As I understand it, the basic
rule is that AB and CA must each be longer than BC--but (talking about
an itinerary that begins in the USA and goes to Europe) that isn't going
to be a factor in your case.
Open jaw is convenient and it can be especially advantageous if time is
a big factor. However, it comes at a cost. Depending on the specifics of
your situation, you might be better off getting a normal return A-B-A
and finding a(n additional) cheap flight from C back to B. Europe is
full of no-frills, cut-rate carriers, such as Ryanair, easyJet, etc.
They work on a point-to-point basis, so you don't get gouged on a
one-way ticket.
Good luck.

I'd try:
plane USA->Berlin->Rome->USA
plus
train Berlin->Poznan->Berlin
MJ
