Travel to Lithuania
Hi all. I am interested in traveling this summer/fall to Vilnius - have never
been there before - am very interested, therefore, in travel tips = places to visit, flight suggestions, etc. So, anyone with experience traveling to Lithuania (I am from Pittsburgh, PA) = thank you! Scott |
Re: Travel to Lithuania
If your visit in August or September, you HAVE to go to the seaside
(Palanga or Nida), and spend some days there. The two resorts are very different - depends what you prefer. Nida (located on the Curonian Peninsula, close to the Kaliningrad border) is much calmer, with huge sand dunes and splendid views from their top. Palanga this time will be very busy, but still with a nice atmosphere, lots of bars, etc. Palanga is much easier to reach from by express buses from Vilnius (over 4 hours). For Nida, there is only one daily direct bus from Vilnius, or you may change in Klaipeda, where you will first have to take a ferry on your own. It's much more remote and worse connected, though, therefore you may consider staying in Palanga and doing a day-trip to Nida from there. I also suggest that you spend a day or two in Kaunas (where I am originally from). Its old town and centre are charming, and so is the Pazaislis monastery on the 'Kaunas See' (an artificial lake on the Neman river, with beautiful landscapes). There is also an interesting open-air museum of traditional Lithuanian houses and lifestyle in Rumsiskes, close to Kaunas. If you are in Kaunas on a Sunday, there is a tourist boat (ship) going from Pazaislis to the museum through the 'Kaunas Sea', leaving at 11:00, and returning at 4pm. The trip takes one hour and is really worth it! Don't hesitate to ask me if you have any further questions ([email protected]). Robert |
