Default Travel Italy, recommendation please

Hi,

Next month I'm going to travel to Italy for 2 months (the typical
places: Milan, Venice, Firenze, Rome). I'm travelling from Spain. I
don't know if it is better to travel by car or travel by plane (there
are really good offerts in Volare.com) and then travel inside Italy by
train.

Are trains expensive in Italy??? Is there any card... I can buy so
that I can travel in Italy by train for a period of days and it gets
cheaper?? I gave a look at Trenitalia.com but it doesn't seem very
cheap...

Any recommendation about it???

Thanks in advance!!!!

Since you are mostly going to big cities, a car would be a burden
rather than a convenience, so it might be better to fly. A car would
be a convenience if you were mostly visiting the countryside.

The trains in Italy are among the cheapest in western Europe. If you
want to save money, travel second class and take the Inter-regional
trains rather than the Eurostar or IC trains. None of the cards
offered by trenitalia is likely to pay off unless you spend a good
proportion of your time on the train.

train tickets before?? Is Travelitalia.com the best way??

Thanks!!!

There is usually no need to buy the tickets beforehand. If you are
travelling on a popular route, especially on a Friday or Sunday
evening, or at rush hour, you may want to either get a seat
reservation or a Eurostar ticket (which has an automatic reservation).
In this case, buying the ticket a bit before hand might be a good
idea. You can buy the ticket for your departure when you arrive in a
particular city.

There are ticket machines in the larger stations which are easy to use
and have instructions in several languages. They also take credit
cards. However, sometimes the line for the machines is longer than the
line at the ticket windows.
