I did the same thing. She is from Bistrita and we have been married for
three+ years. Email me if you want advice from someone who's been there.

It seems to be a common perception in Europe that starting from the country
to one's immediate east, everyone is a pickpocket, car thief, drug dealer
and/or sexual deviate.

It might be too late, but just in case, a few words of advice from a Romanian guy that managed to get away from there.

BE CAREFUL with that lady, it is well known that plenty of east-european ladies would do ANYTHING for a PR visa in a decent country.
BE CAREFUL with your visit in Bucharest, I visited that place on several occasions and I can tell you, it is a dangerous place for a visitor, especially for someone that has no clue about the Romanian way of life. Thanks God I didn't have to live there. And I am a Romanian!
BE CAREFUL with the pickpockets, they are experts. Avoid public transport at all costs and try to have someone trusted to guide you ALLWAYS if you want to do some sightseeing. And btw the taxi drivers are big time crooks too.

There are some good things though...
* A lot of Romanian women make good, faithful partners. If you are lucky enough to find a good Romanian lady comming from a decent family, most likely she will make a very good partner/wife. Also they are good looking and stay good looking ;-)
* There are some places worth to visit there (Bucharest excluded in my oppinion). The mountains especially are nice this time of the year. However, having someone trusted to guide you/act as an interpret is essential.

And a last bit of advice. When you'll go and visit her parents do not ask if the Rromani (gipsies, zigeuners, tzigani, gittani) and Romanians are the same. It is one of the most offensive things to ask a Romanian that! ;-)

Good luck mate! You're gonna need it. Hehehe...

this does sound distressingly like a recommendation for a breed of dog...

The reason I had first asked these questions was to try and get some information from people who had been to Romania and their experiences. Some replys have been helpful and some have not. I don't need any replys that put down the people or the country. Just wondered about going through customs, life over there, the flight from Washington to Vienna, you know .....general things.
It seems that some people think that because she is Romanian and I am American, that it is an instant scam. We have communicated since Oct. 2002, we have taken the time to get to know each other and now we will finally meet in person. I am not worried at all about this whole thing being a "scam". In a couple of weeks I will travel there and, when I return I will post my personal experiences if there is anyone intrested in them.
Thanks again for all the helpful positive posts.
