Default Tour d'France Seeing the race on L'Alpe d'Huez

Hi all, I hope to see some of the Tour d'France this summer and have a
couple of questions about the day the tour visits L'Alpe d'Huez. I have
a room at a hotel in Grenoble and access to a car. How do I get to
the top of the alp? Can I drive to the top in the morning or is
parking impossible? I understand a bus goes from Grenoble to the top;
will it be running that day and can I count on a place on the bus. Are
there any suggestions as to where to see the race.

Thanks for any and all help, Gordon, who is hoping Lance takes the
lead that day.

Most spectators will be there AT LEAST 24 hours in advance, so parking is
out. That's apart from all the morons who turn up an hour before the race
gets going and expect to find a space.
Remember, this is French "organisation".
I'd reckon on camping where you intend to watch from overnight, both before
and after - remember, everone will want to get down a single lane track at
once. Result...chaos.

Alpe d'Huez is a small town/ski resort. So there's nothing to get to the
"top" of.

The only problem with the mountain stages is that there's usually only 1
slow, winding road over to and from these alpine passes, and the tour is
using it. Which means, you've got to get up there quite a while before the
tour is expected, and face long delays to get out after it's been. If you
really want to be at the top of the hill, then you'll need to go early -
possibly the previous day. Otherwise, why not find an easier place to get
to, and watch it from there?

Problem is 100,000+ other people have all got the same idea!!
From my previous experiences at the Vuelta, I suggest you either camp
overnight
or you set out very early in the morning and walk or cycle the L'Alpe
d'Huez.
The hardest part of the day will be getting off the mountain.

Jan , who is hoping Santiago Botero takes the lead that day!!!
