Default Is Tom Cruise "stingy"?

One fairly common occurrence in some parts of the USA is to put out a
"donation jar" in a place of business and to have a little sign on it
explaining the purpose of asking for the donation.

A young girl in a neighboring state was injured in an accident about
four months ago. She had large medical expenses. A "donation jar" was
placed in the local Dairy Queen. Tom Cruise happened to stop in last
month, noticed the jar, and placed $5,000 cash in the jar.

My question -- Is Tom Cruise "stingy"? After all, this represents
probably only about 0.01% of his net worth.

Depends on how much other giving there was, I guess. If that's all he gave
during the year, I'd guess it was a cynical PR gesture.

Did he ask that his donation be counted and reported? I rather suspect
that he didn't and, if my supposition is correct, to do so is
improper.

I guess OT will be the norm for awhile until everyone gets their disdain for
America off their chest.

This post is right to the point, and it doesn't matter whether the Tom
Cruise anecdote is accurate or not. The *end result* is what matters.
If I were begging on the street and had a chance for a handout of $200 from
a known multimillionaire or $2 from a poor person, and could only take one
of them, which would it be? Take $200 and bitch about what an asshole the
guy was becuz it's only .00001 percent of his net worth? Or, take $2 and
praise the poor person for giving me 1/2 his net worth?? The answer for
most of us is pretty clear.

Then, what is all the bitching about the U.S.?? Yes, we have a lot. No,
we're not ashamed of it. Yes, we earned it--every penny. No, we're not
afraid to share some of it with someone in need. No, we're not perfect.
Who the hell is? At the end of the day, we will give more than anyone.
Both through our government and from individuals and corporations....

One could go on and on here about how the Europeans and others ought to keep
their traps shut. Thanks to the U.S., they're not all speaking German. Or,
maybe worse, Russian. You've heard that argument before, but too bad. It's
true. If we had sat on our hands when the Germans decided to take over the
world, we'd be speaking it too.

So, for all the people who have said or will say in the future, that the
U.S. is stingy, just go **** off. End of rant.

Silly question once you do the math - assuming your figure of .01% is
accurate.

What's your net worth? If we say the average middle class Joe has a net
worth of $200,000 (and I'm really guessing but I think I'm high on the
amount), the .01% of that is $20.

If an average guy puts $20 in that jar - is he stingy?

Could be a long time then.

This thread is amazing. How could you criticize anybody for donating
$5000 to a worthy cause? Get a life, people.
