Three nights in Malaga
We are having a long week-end in the Malaga area in January.
Does anyone have any good ideas on a place to stay or places to go ? Thanks in anticipation, Peter Lawless |
Re: Three nights in Malaga
Funny because I stayted in Malaga for 3 days in January of 2001. I stayed at
the Parador Gibralfaro and you can get more info at http://www.parador.es/english/parado...?selparador=36 This parador is on top of a hill and is probably the highest point in Malaga with view of the harbor, the bullring and the city center. It's right beside the Gibralfaro castle which is one of the main tourist sites in Malaga. The accomodations were great and their dining room has a fantastic view of the surrounding. Having said that, I was personally "bored" in Malaga after just a day. Aside from the cathedral, the square where Picasso was born and perhaps the harbor area, there's just not that much else in the city. However, if you have a car, day trip destinations like Ronda and other cities are within reach. Even Granada could be done as a day trip though it could be quite hectic. >This parador is on top of a hill and is probably the highest point in Malaga >with view of the harbor, Its fairly small and usually booked. The other parador Malaga Golf is under the airport flightpath. If you like food and tapas you should be OK for three days although I agree a trip out would make sense. Re: Three nights in Malaga
Peter,
I would recommend staying in Marbella instead of Malaga. We had done research on Malaga a couple years ago, and based on guidebooks, talking with people that were there, etc everyone concluded Malaga was a little dim. I think a guidebook had Malaga pegged for the highest crime rate too ---- take that for what its worth. Marbella is about 25 miles south west down the N-340, which is a very nice and new highway, along the mountains. The Costa Del Sol is a gorgeous area with the beaches and mountains in the backdrop. We stayed at Don Carlos, a hotel right on the beach. http://www.hotel-doncarlos.com/ The place has three swimming pools, private access to the beach, some really nice gardens (I dunno what they would look like in January?) complete with Palm trees, streams, etc Simply beautiful. Hotel staff was nice. There were something like 5 golf courses within a few miles, all of which the hotel can handle booking for you. Nice place. Good luck, Keith Pittsburgh "peter lawless" <[email protected]> wrote in message news:<[email protected]>... > We are having a long week-end in the Malaga area in January. > Does anyone have any good ideas on a place to stay or places to go ? > > Thanks in anticipation, > > Peter Lawless |
RE: Three nights in Malaga
I live in Malaga. Which kind of hotels would you like to stay in?....
And what are your interest?... |
Re: Three nights in Malaga
Marbel? Heavens no! This is the most touristy and crowded destination you
can find in the Costa del Sol. It's always swarmed with Brits and so most everyone is speaking English, so much so that you can't even tell you're in Spain. You might as well be in any English-speaking beach resort like Cancun, Miami Beach or Newport Beach. Why travel to such great lengths just to see a place that is just full of spas, hair salons, jewelry shops and the like. Plus if you have a car, parking is nearly impossible. No disrespect for your opinion and to each his own, but I much prefer the Costa de la Luz, or the Atlantic side, far west of Marbel. A city like Cadiz, for example, to me epitomized what the Old Spain should look and feel like, especially near the port area. There are other small, less touristy spots in the Costa de la Luz like a small town called Zahara de los Atunes. Just my .02 worth. There's a photo and good description on the parador site: http://www.parador.es/castellano/paradores/ficha.jsp . This page is in Spanish with an English option available. GG |
Re: Three nights in Malaga
Malaga is a fantastic city, the brits head out on coaches as soon as they
arrive. I'd really recommend staying in the Parador overlooking the harbour, very reasonable and a very high standard. Dont listen to anybody that tells you otherwise, the town is lovely and just right for spending a few days. Email me if you want more info or my web site has some info on Malaga Angus -- Fantastic Self Catering Accommodation in the mountains of Andalucia.
