Default The Pilgrimage Road to Santiago

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has walked or otherwise travelled the
pilgrimage road to Santiago de Compostela lately? I am reading Paulo
Coelhos book The Pilgrimage, about his experience with the route back
in 1986.
I am considering doing it by feet or maybe bicycle some time after
christmas, and would appreciate whatever you have to say about it.
Also, if anyone else consider doing it, please tell me about your
plans.

Best wishes,
Mads

it's a trip I've always wanted to do - anyway you should also read the book of CEES NOOTEBOOM which is a sort of travelling report - it's very interesting. Unfortunately I just know the italian title which is "Verso Santiago" I hope you can find it in your country.
Ciao

Hi Mads

There are loads of books on the subject the best one seems to be The
Pilgrims Guide to the Camino de Santiago by Valina Elias the Daily Telegraph
have a web page giving all sorts of info on the Pilgrimage. at
[email protected]. I haven't done the pilgrimage as yet but am
researching it at the momen and it seems that the weather in the early part
of the year is not that great for walking or biking - spring and early
summer seems to be the best option where you can make the most of it.

I travel to the area frequently, but have not done the pilgramage (its on the
"to do" list). But, here are some resources you may find helpful:

www.turgalicia.es

www.xacobeo.es (the official website - quite impressive)

www.spain.info (I've had trouble getting into this site lately....but when you
can, find the Turismo office near you and email them asking for info. on the
routes. If you are lucky (and it is still in stock) they will send you the
book published for the Jubilee (I don't have the exact name on hand).

You may be of heartier stock than me (although my house is sitting under some 6
inches of snow today)....but winter in that part of Spain is cold....and the
routes can be out-of-the way. Me, I'd look into early fall or last spring.

Consider:

http://www.caminosantiago.-
com/web_ingles/index.htm

http://www2.retegal.es/-
pxaco/comezo.asp?idioma=ingles

http://www.csj.org.uk/

We walked the Camino in Late April and May. Our start on April 26 in
Roncesvalles was in a snow storm. For the 35 days we experienced about 3
days of rain, all of it in Galacia. Generally pleasant spring weather in the
20C range..
