I will be arriving at Praha hl.n. train station in the evening from
Munich. My hotel is near the Republic Square. I have heard so much
about not trusting Prague taxis, so I am wondering what advice people
would have about what to do when I arrive at the station.
Thanks.
Gene

The general advice you've heard about Prague taxis is correct, be
cautious! Namesti Republiky is not far from hlavni nadrazi - a 4 minute
(2 stops) journey on tram no. 5 in the direction of Veletrzni (925
metres according to the Prague public transport website
http://www.dp-praha.cz/en/index.htm) and trams run about every 8
minutes. The fare is 8 Kc.

Or call AAA Cab--they've been constently trustworthy and have dispatchers who
speak some English. Tel.: 1080 or 8577, last time I looked.

Our first time to Praha (arriving from Muenchen via rail), we got
taken for a ride... i.e. don't trust the taxi's waiting outside. But,
using the transport service at the airport (on subsequent trips), and
having our hotels arrange the taxis, we've gotten fair deals at
pre-set prices.
I would recommend contacting your hotel, and seeing what a fair price
from the train station is. Then it should be possible to negotiate
the pre-set price before getting into the cab... or maybe have the
hotel arrange for a taxi to meet you there.?
(Trams are OK if you pack light, which unfortunately, we don't ;-(
