Default Switzerland in September ?

Is Switzerland a good place to visit in September ? How is the weather
there in September ? Secondly, is it much more colder towards the end
of September compared towards the beginning of September ? We are planning
to visit Switzerland from September 4th till 11th. Is that a good time to
visit considering the weather ? We have a 14 month baby with us.

Thanks

Manish

Have a look at www.weatherbase.com for climatic averages for major cities.
Naturally on average it could be colder at the end of September than the
beginning. So to get an impression of what the weather could be like have a
look at August for the beginning of September, and October for the end of
September.

Switzerland has a variety of climates depending on where you are, contrast
Zermatt with Lugano.

I'd say: YES!

Although there's never a guarantee, as always, I consider late summer
and early fall as the best time for holidays in Switzerland.

These are usually the months with the least rain. Still warm, also in
the evenings. Dawn of course is earlier than in june/july, as small
drawback. Least snow in the mountains, which is very good for hiking.
After Septemper it often starts snowing again at higher altitudes.
Little humitidy in the air, which makes the best long distance panoramic
views. The meadows might be less greenish, more yellowish/brownish as
during summer, but probably not this year, since we had plenty of rain
so far.

September is still very mild. I often go for a swimm in Lake Zurich or
the river Limmat (in Zurich as well) which still have nice temperatures
at this time.

If I'd visit Switzerland, I'd definitly choose September!

Aloha
Thomas, living in Zurich since ever.

Hi,

I have just started researching the Switzerland/Austria area for a
possible trip in the next year or so. I am looking for any info on the
area. My wife and I (70 and 71 years young) are interested in seeing
the beautiful sights we hear so much about. Would a 7 to 10 day visit
be enough time? We'd be interested in staying in one or two hotels
with a view and taking day (or 2 day) trips via train, bus, etc. No
skiing, just sightseeing and maybe some short hikes.
Any suggestions as to where I should research on line? Should I be
considering expanding around the Switzerland/Austria area? I am really
just getting started and need all the help I can get. I am hoping to
use American Airlines frequent flier miles, from the New York area.
Thanks. Woody

May I suggest the lake of Thun, Interlaken and the Jungfrau region
in the Bernese Oberland:

There is plenty of web-sites on Switzerland. For planning
a first 7-10 day visit, I would try to get a guide such
as Michelin (the green one) for a description of the country,
the touristic (and other) highlights.

Most convenient way travelling in Switzerland would be using
public transportation, mainly train and postal bus services.
Best link for is http://www.rail.ch/index_e.htm with mainly
http://www.rail.ch/pv/incoming_e.htm and there specifically
Swiss Pass and Swiss Flexi Pass offering unlimited travel on
close to all train, postal bus, lake steamer and city public
transportation (trams, bus ...).
For trains, the most scenic routes imho are Glacier-Express
(Zermatt-Chur or Zermatt-St.Moritz), Golden-Pass (especially
the sections from Lausanne to Lucerne), Bernina-Expess, but
also many small mountrain trains (the one I prefer is from
Zermatt up to Gornergrat: http://www.ggb.ch/englisch/index.html

For the lakes: lake Lucerne, Brienz, Geneva (mainly Lausanne-
to Villeneuve, the east-part of the lake), to a lesser extend
Thoune, Morat-Neuchatel-Bienne, Zurich ... links:
http://www.lakelucerne.ch/index.cfm?page=0&lang=E
http://www.bls.ch/schiff/index_e.html
http://www.cgn.ch/en/index.php
http://www.navig.ch/navig/fr/index.php?page=accueil
http://www.navig.ch/navig/fr/index.p...carte&ssm=pays

As for flying to Switzerland, both Zurich and Geneva airports
have their own railway-station, with "Fly Rail Baggage" allowing
you to forward your luggage directly form your departure airport
to any railway station within the country.

Despite the small size of the country (easy to drive through
in less than a day), there are several distinctive regions
http://usa.myswitzerland.com/en/dest...tinations.html
with all their own characteristics and highlights.

If you consider staying at 2 different places and travel
from there, problem might be to have to make a choice for
best travel connections or nice place. Lucerne might be
a good compromise for central Switzerland. Zurich an other,
but to close to Lucerne (and mostly kind of expensive).
Lausanne or Montreux an other good compromise for Western
Switzerland.

Weather also might have major influence on trips, so best
imho is to leave some flexibility with your itineraries
(its definitely no fun to be in the mountains by bad weather
conditions or worse view limited to fog and clouds).
Depending on time of the year and region, this should not be
a real problem.

Feel free to send me an e-mail if you should have specific
questions

And have a great trip!

We're a bit older than the two of you. When we were younger we found it easy to
zip from place to place. Now we enjoy staying in each spot for several nights.

I think 7 days is too short. Why not go for two weeks?

Also, even if you don't want to use a trip set up by someone else, I sugest you
contact Idyll - at least to get their brochure. They run "untours" - esentially
getting you there, renting you a place for 2 weeks, and arranging either train
or car travel for that time.

www.untours.com

They are stong in the Swiss/Austrian area.
