Default Student from Canada wishing to travel.

Hello there, Charlie here.
I'm in Newfoundland Canada myself and I was thinking of spending 3 weeks of
August backpacking through Europe..

I'd like to see France, Italy, Spain, and perhaps some others...

I'm trying to do up a pricelist for myself (and some friends that may join
me) .. so I was wondering to get some info ...

how much are hostels generally... how much can I expect to pay for food and
what not.. and perhaps other things I might not be thinking of?

I'm only looking to get some rough estimates...

thanks for your help.

Budget $50 a day if you want to live very cheaply (hostels and buying
food at markets only).

And get some Europe travel books. Everyone seems to recommend Europe
Through the Back Door by Rick Steves. It covers the general
information you seem to require.

US$50? I guess if you include a lot of transport.

The most expensive hostels are $25. In the south you can stay for $10 or
less.

Even in Scandinavia you can get a liter of orange juice and enough bread and
cheese for 10 sandwiches for $5 or so. At outdoor markets you can pick up
fruit for cheap.

Though it occurs to me that you may be talking Canadian dollars, in which
case $50 makes sense for cheap travel.

A backpacker may also want to consider Let's Go and Lonely Planet which are
more oriented towards the true budget traveler than Steves.

Get a guidebook. I suggest getting it now, so you can plan a bit. Lonely
Planet's Europe on a Shoestring 2003 has just been released, but I have not
read it yet (Has anyone?). The 2001 version was fantastic. These contain
prices of hostels and stuff, and are usually pretty accurate, except the
ones listed are often full for obvious reasons.

Generally, hostels will vary between 10-25 Euros a night, depending on the
location and time of year.

Hey man,

I'm in the same boat here as this is my first time. I can help you
though because everyone I know has done this. First off I'm budgeting
an avg. of $20-25 Canadian a day for hostels. In terms of food, in
France its expensive so you'll want to buy from bakeries rather than
eating from restaurants. In Italy the food is resonabley priced $8
for a plate of pasta that will definetly fill you. So in the end
budget at least another $20 for eating per day. Other things to keep
in mind are:
- reserving seats on the train cost money
- tourist things (ie musuems)

hope this helps

Hi Charlie there, Alejandro here (Spain)

As other posters have said, I'd recommend Lonely Planet for
backpacking trips. There you can get a good price estimate for the
destinations you choose.

Apart from that, you may want to consider the following when planning
your trip:

a) Southern Europe can be _very_ hot in August. Depending of what
parts of Spain and Italy you may be visiting, hot can be unbearable if
you are not used to it.

b) Tourist destinations will be crowded.

c) France, Italy, Spain, and perhaps some others... Well, for three
weeks definitively the "perhaps some others" part is excesive for me.
Even the three countries you list can be too much. You will spend a
lot of time in transportation (making your trip more expensive), and
probably you'll only get a glimpse of these places. Anyway, this is a
matter of personal opinion, and maybe get a glimpse is what you want
in your first trip (it sounds as if it is)if you think it will be the
first one of a long list (which I hope will be)

Have a good trip,

Alejandro

Agree with Miguel regarding books:

LP, Let's Go, Rough Guide, Berkeley book.

Forget about Steves.
