Default Strike: No trains in Austria since Wednesday

The trade union of OeBB workers has started an unlimited strike at Wednesday
Nov. 12 0:00. The trade union protests against the OeBB-restructuring plans
of the government.

With the exception of some local private lines no passenger and no freight
train is running in Austria. Also all international trains from, to and
through Austria have stopped running.
Except from expensive planes no public long distance transportation is
acutally possible _within_ Austria.

An end of the strike is not yet known.

I'll bet Austrian Airlines loves that. Please keep us informed.

Hmm.. there aren't much of domestic air traffic in Austria and Austrian
don't have much of what's running. On the other hand I think they
definitely not loves that local trains for the Wien airport doesn't run and
many can't reach Vienna by train for the airport.

Don't misunderstand "within". They also block trains between
Germany/Switzerland and Italy. Same for trains between Germany and
Switzerland east of lake Bodensee, since there are some km Austria (in
fact one town, Bregenz) in the way.

True, domestic air-traffic isn't a big issue in Austria.
But: Intersky - a small airline - was offering all its free seats from
Vienna to Friedrichshafen (actually Germany but close to the most Western
part of Austria, where no big airport is) for 29 EUR plus taxes.

Austrian flies domestic routes with small planes. A 50 seater is IMO the
biggest in normal schedule.

But the buses are running, so I do not see any problem reaching the airport!

Yes, but with "within" I meant, that there is no suitable alternative for
travel within Austria. On many international routes there are regular
private bus services, but there is hardly no domestic long distance bus
service in Austria.

For this trains SBB and DB provide a bus service between Lindau and St.
Margrethen.

But ÖBB make money with passengers from Germany, on days they run
trains.

Government and trade union have achieved an agreement yesterday (Friday).
Trains started running again at 18:30.

Theoretically. In practice it took a few more hours before they
actually started.

This morning, the Donauwalzer (EN 324) had 2 ÖBB sleeping coaches and a
few DB coaches. Did it start in Vienna?
