Default Storage in Germany

I'll be studying in Heidelberg for four weeks, then touring southern Germany
for another two weeks. What are the options for storing my books and other
extra stuff for the last two weeks? I want to travel light for the last two
weeks, then return to pick up my stuff before heading home. Much thanks.

Where will you be staying in Heidelberg? In a hotel or B&B or college
rooms? It's worth asking if you can leave your stuff there. Many places can
be very accommodating (no pun intended).

Great question! I'm planning the same thing the following fall, though
I'll be studying 8 weeks and travelling the last 10 days or so.

The lockers are generally only for 24 hours aren't they, plus they're
pretty small? The "left luggage" areas sometimes only accept stuff if you
have a train ticket. That might be worth a try though, if all else fails.

My first idea would be the left luggage ("Gepäckaufbewahrung") in the
nearest large train station or airport. Don't use coin-operated lockers,
because they are emptied after 2 or 3 days. But a left luggage with a human
on the counter should probably do it.

I don't think so

Why "if all else fails", it's the obvious place.

Another option, which I might take, it to just ship the stuff home at the
end of the course.

I think it's impossible NOT to know enough nice people among
Heidelberg's students after 4 weeks where you can leave some stuff.

In most German rail stations, the lockers can be used for up to 72 hours.
If you use them for more than 24 hours, you will have to pay a supplement
when picking up your baggage.

Especially at Heidelberg station, there are a few really big lockers.
Apart from skiing equipment, I can hardly imagine a luggage they won't hold.

For _long-time_ storage, you might also ask a removal company - go to
www.gelbeseiten.de, type "umzuege" into the first and "heidelberg" into
the second input field, for a list of phone numbers.

Best idea is normally really to ask at the place you stay if they can store
your stuff for this time. Even if you give them some money for this.

Lockers are no option for 2 weeks as they are emptied after 72 hours.

I'm not aware of a Gepäckaufbewahrung (left-luggage office) at Heidelberg
Hbf (and I'm there quite often - but also never needed to store anything
there). But according to the station map
http://www.bahn.de/pv/view/static/ba...heidelberg.pdf
there is really none. There is one in Frankfurt Hbf and at Frankfurt
Airport.
