Default Stockholm

Regular readers will know that Herself and I are going to Venice next
month.

We are now playing leapfrog with trips, in that I have started work on
the next one before we take this one. In a quest for symmetry, we are
heading for a city which is sometimes described as the Venice of the
North: Stockholm. First weekend in April.

Why? We were offered a good deal, and we have never been there. So I
booked. What's there to see and do in Stockholm? Can we afford to eat,
or should we bring sandwiches? Are the Swedes like other Scandinavians
in their ability to use English?

You have not studied www yet ?

Bring sandwiches and you become a monument yourself.

Yes they are.

If you're prepared to eat your main meal at lunchtime then you can eat cheaply.
Look out for the "Dagens Rätt", usually a 3-4 course lunch including salad,
coffee etc.

You're unlikely to have a problem, but don't assume the same proficiency in
English as Swedish travellers you've probably met travelling abroad.

I'm reluctant to reply to this one having still not seen your Madrid trip
report - why not just post what you have got as it is ? :-)

An interesting old town,
lots of water
The archipeligo - a group of Islands with boat trip around/between. - But it
is much better in the summer - I suspect that April may still be a little
cold.
The midnight sun - (but not in April).

Bring Sandwiches. (I havent been for several years but when I did go I was
glad I was on expenses)

    > Are the Swedes like other Scandinavians

I had no problems speaking no Swedish.

Check out the Lord Nelson and Lady (whatever Nelsons wife was called) when
you are looking for hotels.

It's nearly finished. Any month now.

Sound like the sort of stuff we like. We'll pack some woollies.

    >The midnight sun - (but not in April).
Oh dear. Back to the drawing board.

I'd happily go on expenses, but nobody wants to send me.

Good. I have yet to have problems arising out of speaking no Swedish
-- not a handicap in Budapest or Paris or Madrid.

The hotel is sorted, thanks. We bought a good-value package. Do you
mean Lady Hamilton, somebody else's wife who was Horatio's bit on the
side?

Don't miss the Vasa Museum. Standing back and looking at this
impressive relic of the 1600s was about the same feeling one gets
standing in front of the Cologne cathedral.

Not many bargains to be had in Stockholm, but most everyone except the
very old speak English.. so they'll take your money and say "thank
you" quite well.

Well, the midnight sun has never been so far south as Stockholm, (but
may be in 2005, who knows?)
Then you don't have any regrets for not comming summertime!
I'm sure you'll enjoy the town,
..but be prepared of chilly days!
Aud in Norway ;-))

I,m sure

Even if you cant actually see the sun.
Or maybe it was just light up to 2 or 3 am and gets dark for a few minutes
after that.

Yes, FSVO light, but it's not much different to what you'd get in the
far north of Scotland at similar times of year.

Go to the Vasa Museum. It's fascinating. it's also on one of the nice
islands in the city so good to walk to.

I hope, for your sake, it is better than the feeling I got when standing in
front of Koln Cathederal.
