Default souvenirs from Spain

When we travel we always buy a nice souvenir for our home. I know that
Lladro porcelain is made in Spain but wonder if prices are cheaper than at
home. In Canada prices start at $ 175.00 (U.S. Dollars) for the smallest
piece. Are there better bargains in Spain and what about the duty free
boutique at the Malaga airport. Any other suggestions for souvenirs (no
junk)?

I got some nice antique tiles in Sevilla -- little animals, much like
the ones you would see in the Alhambra etc (although not nearly as
old, probably late 19th century). -- and set them into my mantle.
They were really not terribly expensive, I think perhaps $15 each.
Truly a memento of Andalucia.

Lladro isn't junk, but it's so widely available that I would urge you to
consider something else.

If you're going to Toledo, look at the Damascene products. These are
items -- pins, bracelets, platters, picture frames -- almost any item
you can imagine -- made of black steel. The basic steel background is
decorated with a patterned overlay of various metals. You can find
something in every price range depending on the size of the item, the
intricacy of the design, or the value of the overlay material.

I understand that you will flight to Malaga. You will find big souvenir
shops here, mainly in the old center. Other option is look for them in the
department stores "El Corte ingles", where you can have VAT refund if you
are from outside EU.

I reccomend you not to purchase items at the airport, usually they are more
expensive there.

Regards from Malaga

Lladró is expensive, wherever you buy it. There are several official
stockists in Spain who ship worldwide and have on-line catalogs. One example
is http://store.yahoo.com/lladro/index.html, JBE Joier of Barcelona. You can
compare prices with what you are paying in Canada. (Note E=euro). Lladró has
a factory shop at their City of Porcelain near Valencia, where 'seconds' are
sold at reduced prices. You can get details on how to get there at
www.lladro.com.

Try Sargadelos ceramics. They make the royal dishes, but have some very nice
non-dinnerware decorative (and very Spanish) pieces. They are relatively
undiscovered outside of Spain, so their prices remain reasonable.
www.sargadelos.com. If you have a chance to visit their factory in Castro,
don't miss the opportunity. The factory is interesting...ther trip through the
countryside to get there unforgettable.

I also like to pick up Inoxicrom pens while in Spain. They are quite similar
to Cross pens....with more style and less cost.

Of course, there are the standard Toledo damasque work, etc. too.....

I second that "El Corte Ingles", an elegant department store, is better
than airport shops. My wife is fond of Majorica (artificial) perls and
jewellery, that aren't particularly expensive.

I go to Spain two or three times a year and have never had a
problem. Although I no longer go to packageland places (although
I have in the past) often upsets can be caused by alcohol and sun
rather than food. I do eat an olive oil based diet at home
though, which might have something to do with it.
