Quality, who cares about quality... another interesting index is
the infant mortality rate. The US has made staggering progress in the
last few years, putting it ahead of Poland, and just behind Greece.
See http://www.bartleby.com/151/a28.html for example.

Anyone knows what is the reason that the USA has a 50% higher infant
mortality rate than most N/W European countries and Canada?

Just a wild guess, but I imagine that poor nutrition and lack of access to
decent health care for those on low incomes play a big part.

With so many people enjoying their freedom and democracy in prison, plus
all
those people walking round with guns, you'd think the cities of the USA
would be #1 in safety.
Shame on you Jens for spreading such false facts about our American
friends!

And some more statistics: http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/rds/pdfs/r88.pdf

USA is still #2 behind Russia, keep trying, you're sure to make #1!

In shock and awe.

Check some of the other threads. The reasons given are ingenious.

Infant mortality rates among American minorities are especially high;
NW European countries generally lack such minority populations (or
they are a smaller percentage of the total population compared to the
US). The high mortality rates among minorities are not simply a
matter of income or education - for example mortality of infants born
to college-educated blacks is much higher than for their white
counterparts. For an interesting discussion of this problem see
http://www.floridahealthstat.com/pub...hcj/miller.htm .

What exactly is wrong with being number 2 in number of
people in prison?

Guess the Europeans like a lot of whine with their
cheese?

It indicates social problems: Either there is a lot of crime or people are
being imprisoned for no good reason.

Or the U.S.administration/Congress (not just this admin) is kissing
up to the far, far, far right Christian fundamentalists whose votes
they think they need by throwing people in jail for, e.g. using
marijuana to alleviate intractable synptoms of chronic illness.

Massive resources diverted from chasing/catching/prosecuting the
*real* criminals.

Inadequate access to health care, except for the wealthy? (Must
certainly contribute!)
