Sorry guys but I think both of you are equally to blame for this row. =
Pat was too quick on the trigger in criticizing Gregory's =
recommendation. There are a lot of recommendations put forth on this =
board and it is up to the individual reader to decide whether to pursue =
that recommendation or not. Gregory, on the other hand, was equally =
culpable in accusing Pat of being a homophobe just because he took =
exception to his post. Guys, I think the bottom line is that you will =
read a lot of suggestions on this board that will not quite agree with =
your point of view, in which case, you are under no obligation to follow =
it or even finish reading it. Just ignore it and move on rather than =
embarking on a personal vendeta. Enough said!

Smaller hotels are good for that too -- places with small breakfast rooms
where you see your fellow travellers.

You are in for such an empowering experience! In my younger years, I always
felt like someone HAD to travel with me, or I couldn't go... (didn't help
that my mother would freak out at the thought). Now, as I like bike trips,
so I usually join a tour for a week and then head off on my own. I love
Central/Eastern Europe. One thing -- especially since you're used to having
a husband around -- have a line prepared if (when) men start to hit on you.
It's not criminal, but some guys can be a real pain in the *** if they think
you're alone. Tell them your husband, boyfriend, etc. is in the hotel, or
whatever. Unless you really are interested in a quick round of unfulfilling
sex :-)

That seems to have become the nature of this place. Many people hang around
here waiting to aggressively jump on anyone that does or says anything
wrong. Others seem to just want to put their knowledge or experience above
everyone elses. This annoys me, because travel by nature demands patience
and tolerance, something that is not particularly prevalent in this ng at
the moment.

BTW, you were top-posting in HTML which some seem to consider a crime worse
than genocide.

And what, in the original post, leads you to that conclusion? It looked
a perfectly reasonable request to me (another single female traveler).

Having not noticed the original post, I offer the possibility that Tim
is the troll 8-)

I travel alone a lot. I stay mostly in youth hostels. I recommend them
often.

Oh, on that I fully agree! (Although he does occasionally have
something intelligent to say.)

Many still allowing for nowhere near "most".

    > Others seem to just want to put their knowledge or experience above

Again, I'm not sure that this by any means describes anything near
a norm nor anything within the 2 sigma variation. And realize that
this reaction might be often connected with a frustration of seeing
what they at least believe to be the repetetive reposting of
erroneous information.

    > This annoys me, because travel by nature demands patience

Actually, much like travel, you have to be careful about judgements
based upon the behavior and existence of the most irritating features.
I actually find this one of the lesser of these groups with these
features. Take some time to actually count up posts some time.
You might be surprised how many are basically just responses. Yes
some folks offering differing opinions and even disagree with
points of view offered by others, I actually WANT that. The silly
"homophobe" kinda response is pointless but I think a quick study of
a few threads might show that those account for a fairly small
number of the total responses. Albeit, the current middle eastern
political issues have racked up the volume and content in alot
of threads. This is a passing thing.

    > BTW, you were top-posting in HTML which some seem to consider a crime worse
    > than genocide.
[snip]

Because it "violates" the conventions and ettiquette of the "community",
something travelers are supposedly to avoid.
