Sardinia
For various reasons (not least that I have to make it a shorter trip
now), our Baltics/Russia plans for August will be postponed. I'm thinking of a week in, er, Sardinia instead- a week near the end of August. How crowded would it be there then? I'd love some feedback if anyone's been there at that time (or otherwise in peak season.) Looks like it has some really beautiful spots... -- (*) ... of the royal duchy of city south and deansgate David Horne- http://www.davidhorne.net (don't email yahoo address) usenet (at) davidhorne (dot) co (dot) uk |

We were there at the end of July/beginning of August last summer, and while it was busy, it was by no means unpleasant. We stayed in the north-east near Arzachena (sp???) and there were lots of great places to go to the beach, or inland. We'd be going again this year, except for an arrangement problem. HTH B; |

Early days yet, but maybe thinking about staying 3-4 days in two different places, one probably not too far from the airport at Alghero. Most people equate Sardinia with the super rich enclaves around the Costa Smeralda, but the island has a huge amount to offer at reasonable prices away from that corner. We are going in July before the big Italian vacation period to our favorite campsite up in the northwestern corner not far from Santa Teresa. The last week of August you should be ok as the crowds start disappearing by then. The Italians are mostly on vacation from the last week of July till after mid-August, however the island is so big you never get the sensation of it being crowded. Offseason the island is deserted. Apart from fabulous beaches, be prepared for unforgetable local produce like cheese, hams, wines, sweetmeats and special kinds of ravioli. If you're looking for somewhere to stay, I'd recommend trying for an agriturismo, or a lot of camping sites have caravans permanently built up. Much more fun than a hotel. T. |

Thanks for the various suggestions and thoughts. I do get the impression that it's quite easy to escape the crowds there, but to a point I'm not bothered by crowds, within reason. As the flight I'm looking at gets in quite late, I think it's inevitable we'll start by staying near Alghero. -- (*) ... of the royal duchy of city south and deansgate David Horne- http://www.davidhorne.net (don't email yahoo address) usenet (at) davidhorne (dot) co (dot) uk |

I suspect you might have plonked me, but let me say that it will be crowded, and expensive. You sure will be able to have fun, but remember that pretty much the whole of Italy takes August off, and Sardinia is a really popular place to head. At the end of August it will still be right in the middle of ultra high season. -- --- DFM - http://www.deepfriedmars.com --- -- |

I've travelled to some places at peak season, and it's been fine (Istrian coast recently, for example.) The airfare is cheap- I can certainly put up with some higher prices- I'll vacillate another few hours or so, but then I'm going to book the air tickets! :) -- (*) ... of the royal duchy of city south and deansgate David Horne- http://www.davidhorne.net (don't email yahoo address) usenet (at) davidhorne (dot) co (dot) uk |

If you mean from the 25th on, it should be less crowded, as Ferragosto peak period this year is from August 11th until the 27th or so. We're also thinking about Sardinia for this summer vacation (we've been there before), but we're not sure yet, have many other destinations in mind. :/ |

I noticed this from the hotel prices- we'd arrive mid-peak on August 21, leaving the 28th. > > We're also thinking about Sardinia for this summer vacation (we've > been there before), but we're not sure yet, have many other > destinations in mind. :/ I just sent an email to Jeremy with the following. I haven't booked the flights yet (I would have yesterday but work got in the way), and it's almost certain something else is going to come up now which makes a holiday then not possible. If so, then I'm looking to November and Morroco, which may or may not be out of bounds here! :) If so, I apologise to the good people of RTE who, as always, came through speedily with much useful information. We're off to Portugal in a week, then off to near John O' Groats (with the most wonderful of hosts) early August. Otherwise, that's it for major leisure travel in the near future, alas! -- (*) ... of the royal duchy of city south and deansgate David Horne- http://www.davidhorne.net (don't email yahoo address) usenet (at) davidhorne (dot) co (dot) uk |

In Italy they were asking for 1400 eur.. In germany I paid 920.. you see the difference of peak times. Of course. most people will have 3 weeks vacations. that is till aug. 26.. but some people will have 4 weeks.. and that ,akes the first week in September. school do not start until sept. 15 normally.. and Sardinia is very popular and famous for its untouched nature. this year they put an additional tax on people who have apartments near the sea in Sardinia and do not live in Sardinia... why don't you try Calabria ?? you have the possibility of having two seas at about 40 to 50 kms from each other. mountains and parks.. and then sea. Tropea is one of the most popular destination in Calabria. |
