Hello Folks,
I'm getting married in September and we really want to go somewhere where we
can relax, slow down, sit on the beach and maybe bring some culture into our
otherwise uncultured lives. Does anyone have any stories or advice they can
share about the island of Sardegna? Anyone have any ideas about villas to
rent, best way to get there, etc. Any input would be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Daniel.

Hi Daniel,
I have some information on my webiste about an interesting area of Sardinia
that's close to a famous beach. It has links to a good place to stay and an
introduction to the archaeology on the island:
http://goeurope.about.com/library/weekly/aa122202a.htm
Sardinia is a fascinating place and the weather ought to be good in the
fall.

I accompanied my husband to Sardegna on a very brief business trip and
I've always wanted to return. For culture, there are lots of prehistoric
sites, if you're interested. I don't know much about art museums there.
There are flights from Rome to Sardegna, but there are also ferries. I
saw mention of a ferry direct from Fiumicino, where Rome's main airport
is, but I don't have details. There are other ferries from Civitavecchia
(a bit north of Rome) and maybe other ports.
I don't know about villas, but there seemed to be plenty there. Some of
the resorts on the island are very expensive, frequented by the
international jet set. Others are geared to ordinary mortals. The whole
island is very beautiful.

For info about villas in all of Italy,
go to www.theparkercompany.com and ask
them to send you their catalog. There
is a contact for you to request it
online. Also, Sardegna may be very
touristy that time of year. Investigate
l'Isola d'Ischia. It is a smaller
island just off the coast of Napoli.
Less tourist inhabited but picturesque
while being convenient, and probably
less expensive. Good connections from
US to Naples.
(45 min hydrofoil ride to Naples.-fare
10euro) website for Ischia is
http://www.ischiaonline.it/ischia/index.phtml.en
It's close to touristy things (Pompeii,
Vesusviuo, Sorento, Naples, Amalfi
Coast, etc)but off the beaten path.

I've seen both Ischia and Sardegna, and for beauty I would choose
Sardegna hands down.
Also, I certainly don't think Ischia is any less touristy than Sardegna.
