Our cruise ship will be stopping in Santorini this October and we read
that there is a cable car that goes up to Phira where one can continue
on to the site of Akrotiri. Does anyone know how far the cable car is
from the port? Can we walk there? Would you recommend hiring a guide
for this trip? Looking forward to hearing from you.

The cruise ships don't dock near Fira, but there is a cable near Fira
to the old dock area. If you stay in Fira (a good choice), there is a
bus to Akrotiri. Don't expect as much from Akrotiri as you may have
gotten from other archeological sites... about an hour or so.

That is correct. Akrotiri isn't the only sight on the island, and if you
have only a couple of hours stay on Santorini I recommend to use it on
something else, like exploring Fira, marvel at the views, etc.
> Does anyone know how far the cable car is from the port?
It starts _in_ the old port. The alternative is a donkey ride, which the
donkey drivers will urge you to do ... the choice is yours.
> Can we walk there?
As both start in the port itself, yes. Or do you mean walk up the stairs?
You'll be exhausted upstairs, and avoid the donkeys underway!
> Would you recommend hiring a guide for this trip?
No.

With regard to Akrotiri, it's probably not worth your time if you have just a
short stay on Santorini. The main attraction is the stunning view from the
caldera rim. Unless you have an entire day, you might be better off just
exploring Fira, and perhaps north of there to Firostefani and Imerovigli. That
should be plenty to keep you busy, but in the event you run out of things to do
Oia on the northern tip of the island is also a nice place to visit.

As you may have gathered, you will tender in to the small port. At this
point you choose, donkey, walk on same path as donkeys, or cable car. The
view fro the top is stunning and there are indeed blue roofed churches. My
idea of a grand time, take the cable car, find a taberna, drink a beer,
shop for trinkets, take cable car back down (or walk if you don't mind the
smell)
