Default Saga Holidays.

How are they doing these days?
Any recent experiences of their
trips?

Interesting you should ask because your note reminded me that having
gone with five times (and satisfied; last time about five years ago), I
have not received a brochure in about two years.

Didn't answer your question, but I'd be curious also.

Each time I've looked at them they seem unnecessarily expensive.
I was investigating on behalf of my aged (but agile) mother. On giving her
age (88) I was told that 'Saga were not carers'.
Not impressed.

A visit to their website at
http://www.saga.co.uk/
or
http://www.saga.co.uk/travel/General3/home.asp
should enable you to order various brochures.
Having once subscribed to their magazine
which is an excellent read I am still bombarded with brochures at
regular intervals.

Do you expect them to be carers, then?

Worked on their Netherlands Inland Waterways and Rhine/Moselle river
cruises in 1998 - reasonable itineraries but overloaded with shore
excursions - many if not most of which were grossly overpriced.

(Hint - book your optional excursions in resort - don't be tempted by
pre-booking at a discount, 'cos if it's pissing down with rain and you
don't feel like going, you WON'T get your money back if you've
pre-booked)

Ships were not brilliant but not bad either.

The "care" issue is a difficult one for the company. Because Saga
cater for the over-50's, there is an assumption amongst some customers
that whatever they do and whatever pre-existing medical condition they
have, Saga staff are there to "nursemaid" them. Certainly in 1998,
customers had to sign a medical declaration to the effect that they
were capable of looking after themselves. In other words, a wheelchair
user cannot expect a guide or coach driver to push them around. On the
other hand, Saga are (or were in 1998) quite happy for a carer under
the age of 50 to accompany a customer.

The brusque "we are not carers" is, I think, a statement to deter
those who assume they will be nursemaided come what may.

The fact of the matter is that people do abuse the system, (and of
course they ARE looked after by Saga staff), and not a single cruise
went by without a whole series of hospital visits, emergency
repatriations et al.

(Incidentally, there are some cruises on the Rhine available for
disabled customers - one that springs to mind is a Dutch ship called
the Zonnebloem (Zonnenbloem) (sp?) run by the Dutch Red Cross I think
- wheelchair access throughout and trained medical staff on board.
Wonderful ship with wonderful staff).

And how often have you been on holiday with Saga? You are far too
young. You have another 40 years to wait: they only take people over
50.

Some friends have used them and say they are very good.
However these friends can spell, so perhaps you wouldn't like them either?
