Default Rye (London Daytrip) Question

I would like to combine a trip to Bodiam Castle and the village of Rye
in a daytrip from London.

Without renting a car, what is my best option? Train? Bus?

You will need a very full day to accomplish both Bodiam and Rye. Rye is
easy enough to reach by train via Charing Cross-Hastings. Allow probably 2
1/2 hours journey time but look at timetables at www.nationalrail.co.uk
To get to Bodiam is tricky. nearest station is Robertsbridge which is on the
Charing X to Hastings line but am unsure if you would be able to find a
taxi to Bodiam. From Bodiam it is possible to get a bus ARRIVA 254
www.arriva.co.uk all the way to Hastings. So in theory you could head
for Robertsbridge then Bodiam (somehow) then bus to Hastings then train
return to Rye then train Hastings London. Maybe someone else will know a
better route.

If you are visiting on a day they are running
(http://www.kesr.org.uk/pages/timetable.htm)
The Kent and Wast Sussex preserved railway
from Tenterden is a possibility

Keith - The steam rail line that runs from near Bodiam castle to Tenterden
is not going to be of much help (methinks) as to actually get to Bodiam or
Rye from London as this does require the main line Hastings service. I was
amused to see on the www.kesr.org.uk website that they still quote CONNEX as
being the rail company that serves this part of the world ! (now
www.setrains.co.uk )And to make things worse, the link they have points
to the French company's website. We all know that CONNEX lost their
franchise and are out of running trains in the south east of England. Maybe
someone should inform the steam ethusiasts that they are out of date ?

A tricky endeavor it seems. Perhaps I should pick one over the other.
From the pictures I've seen, I like the medieval quaintness of Rye
though Bodiam does look spectacular. Does Rye come highly recommended
for a London daytrip or should I look elsewhere? I've also considered
training to York or Bath for the day.

Sure but there's an hourly bus service from Hastings to Tenterden
run by Coastal coaches (the 340) and the 325 runs every half hour
from Hastings to Rye

Rye is a delightful town, especially if you have read the Lucia & Mapp novels of E.F. Benson. Several of
them are set in Rye, which Benson calls Tilling. Benson himself lived there, as did a number of other
writers of the early 20th century. Even without this introduction, however, you can easily spend a full day
in Rye and enjoy it.

Bath and York are also well worth a visit, but I would suggest waiting until you have 2 days available for
each.

Don't bother with Bodiam, go to Scotney (fairly nearby) instead. Far far
nicer.

Its even harder to get to by Public transport as I recall
and there's not much castle left as it was rebuilt as an
Elizabethan house !

The gardens are rather beautiful in summer though.

This is, of course, and entirely personal opinion.

and one with which I must disagree.
