Funnily enough my 'free' ryan flight went in the bin for exactly this
reason. Mine had to be booked more than 30 days in advance
so there was almost nowhere that was worth booking to.
I have better things to do with my time than saving 5 quid going
somewhere that I didn't actually need to go to.

Of all the things I've never, ever taken anywhere, it's food! I just can't
see the point.

Which is why I want to save 140 going to somewhere I don't actually need to
go! :)

You've never been backpacking I see. Okay, yes, I'm intentionally
being obtuse. I don't really pack much food either. I've been known
to sneak in a few things like some peanut butter or a flask of my
favorite bourbon. We occasionally take "beach weekends" around
here and we take along alot of stuff for the room. Mostly breakfast
and snack kinda stuff, maybe some mixin's for blender drinks.
And when folks come down here to visit the Mouse and Whale
many have figured that they would do well to bring a bunch-o-groceries.
But the vast majority of food I pack on a long trip is eaten on
the plane over the pond.

This guy was looking for a very quick and very cheap get-away.
One way to keep it cheap is to buy cheap food at home, where
they know where the cheap food is to be found. Additionally,
one can bring stuff from their own kitchens, thereby using
part of their normal food budget for their travel expenses. Tourist
areas are often the worst places to be buying food on a budget.

Do you mean apart from the year in NZ/Aus, another 3 months in NZ, 3 months
x 3 in the US plus western France, or do you mean the other kind of never :)

Personally, I don't see the point in going anywhere if you're going to bring
home with you - same reason I've never seen the attraction of
caravanning/mobile homing.
"Oooh, we've got to get away, make a change, somewhere different. Try
something new.
I know, lets load a van up with the contents of the kitchen, stick a TV in
it drive to the lake district to watch it!"

See, not being American, I'm able to take stints of over 5 minutes without
consuming inverted corn syrup or hydrogenated vegetable oil ;)
(nothing against Americans, but I've spent enough time in the North, South,
East and West to make that comment - lovely people, but maple sauce on your
bacon and a side of corn chips for BREAKFAST?!?, as I've seen in Denny's
more than once!)

You're too fussy! Plane food ain't THAT bad!

Experience helps - just follow a local!

The other kind. ;-) Actually I meant the kind where you ain't
anywhere
near a grocery store for days. I definitely carried food then.

Some folks don't travel to get away from everything, just certain
things.

That's syrup my boy. And it's a sacrament some places so watch yer
step.

Fussy, hell. It's FUN. Picnic on the plane. Helps pass
the time. Gives one something to look forward to on the
flight beside DVT.

Unfortunately, and it was the case in this situation, the
person wasn't gonna be gone all that long. Time was of
the essence and grocery shopping wasn't potentially one
of his priorities. I seem to remember the whole trip was
something like 4 days.

Yeah, I agree there. And with most of your point. I think the key thing is -
diffr'nt strokes for diffr'nt folks.
Oooh, I just got nostalgic:

Fly anywhere at very short notice. You'll save a fortune.

For example, fly STN to Rome tomorrow (Saturday), return Sunday night,
you'll save 280.
