Default Running in Paris/Berlin

I will be over in Europe this summer and would like to run in the morning.
I thought in Paris, and Berlin, it might be a nice way to see the
neighborhood. Any recommendations on what to do or not to do? I have no
lodging yet, so have some flexibility in which neighborhood to stay.

Thanks.

Paris will probably be quite hot for running, so make sure you get out
early. Pollution will also certainly be higher than in Berlin (where it's
also colder). I recall Parisian streets are cleaned with water in the
morning - best to choose a park, I imagine. I also remember that the
streets start to get full around 7 o'clock.

Berlin... never was awake early in the morning when in Berlin. ;-) Still,
I guess running there will be much easier to do. I wonder if there's
enough space to run a bit close to the Reichstag and Unter den Linden?
Though that's certainly not an economical area for accomodation. Might be
a nice way to start the day, though, if it's really early and life hasn't
woken up yet.

HTH,

Ralph

For urban running you can run along the Seine reasonably comfortably, or in
the major parks. Paris streets are not well suited to running, however;
sidewalks are generally narrow and the roads themselves too dangerous.

Take a look at a map to select an area either near the river or a park.

The Tuilleries are good for running in Paris, I expect that the Seine
woudl not be bad, but a large park is better as one can run on dirt
instead fo concrete.

Running, voluntarily? I haven't done that since my school days.
Anyway, concerning Berlin: It depends on the neighbourhood of course. If
you're somewhere in the vicinity of the city centre (which is a rather
broad concept in Berlin), the Tiergarten is probably the most obvious. You
start in the western city, through the Tiergarten, and end up in the
eastern city, or vice versa.

If you choose your hotel in the outskirts (which I'd recommend), e.g. in
the Southwest, or Southeast towards Potsdam, there are large lake/forest
districts, and quiet suburban neighbourhoods of various styles. Have a look
at a (complete) city map to see where the greenest areas are located in the
Berlin

I'll agree that Tiergarten is great to run in (and I've done it! Ha! ). It's a
largish park smack in the city center - something like the Central Park of Berlin.
Lots of shady little dirt paths, etc. Plus, starting there, lots of attractions
are nearby, like the Brandenburger Tor, the new Reichstag, etc.

Berlin kicks major butt. Enjoy it.

cheers,
nina

In Paris, Bois De Boulogne a great place to run. Also along the North bank
of the Seine (right bank), early in the morning before traffic, great views
of Paris. I stayed near the Latin quarter, took metro to Bois de Boulogne
(Porte Maillot). Run through Bois de Boulogne - lots of joggers - to Porte
d'Auteuil. From there to the Seine passing Roland-Garros where the French
Open tennis competition was just held. Stay on the right bank (or North) back
into Paris, you will see all the main sites in Paris, a good path by the Seine.

Also many joggers at Jardin de Luxembourg.

Running on the streets in Paris, is generally not much fun, the traffic noise
and high sidewalks get very tedious. Good place to stay is the Latin quarter.
this on a Sunday morning about 7am, traffic was minimal in Paris.

Paris and Brussels both have major public inline skatings nights, when roads
are blocked by the police and escorts keep everything running smoothly. Good
reports about both.

I was in Paris a couple of months ago. Try running in the Jardin du
Luxembourg. It's very beautiful scenery to run through.

Well morning runs avoids the terrible smog in those places.

In order to avoid getting lost, run in a well marked place
like a river bank or park. Carry a map and cab fare in case
you do get lost.

Don't know about Berlin but Paris is a beautiful city to run in,
especially on the streets along the Seine. But the problem is there
are so many roads to cross it's difficult to keep up a good pace (and
don't do what I did recently and head off into a motor-vehicles-only
tunnel!). You can also run along the banks of the river but the
surface tends to be quite varied from regular tarmac to bumpy cobble
stones. There are some open areas & parks around the Eiffel Tower
which should be better than the streets.

You'll love Paris whatever you do!
