Rome - Train or Car???

Our last stop in Rome (4 days there) before driving to Tuscany will be the
Vatican. I am debating as to whether to pick up a rental car in Rome or to take
the train to Siena (our first stop) and pick up a car there. My concerns would
be the hassle (in either place) and the time involved as I want to make the
most of that day.
If we see the Vatican that morning, I guess that we will have to return to our
hotel to get our luggage before we do either train or car. Hmmm.

Bob

A car in Rome is a big hassle. Although the rental place is near
the highway, the traffic is still great, and it's not
particularly easy to get out of town. And parking will be a
problem in Siena.
I would avoid the car, but instead of taking a train, I would
take the bus from the Tiburtina Train Station. Take a taxi there
from your hotel.

when we do this sort of thing, we get a car on the outskirts of Rome not
far from the highway -- it is fairly easy to get out of town this way
[presumably there would be a car rental office near the Vatican and that
is an easy shot out of town from there]
it is nigh onto impossible to get to Siena by train from Rome and the
train station in Siena [once you manage to get there by switching trains
etc] is not located in the historic center. for public transport, Bus
is a better bet. I haven't tried it from Rome however.

I would suggest going to Slowtrav.com and reading info. on car travel in
Italy. We drove from Rome airport to outside of Perugia in about two hours
with very little difficulty. Siena would take somewhat longer. A question I
would ask, is where you are staying? If in the city, you need to be sure of
where you can park on arrival. Many city centers are very difficult to
drive in and some are closed to vehicular traffic. We stayed in a villa
where parking was no problem.

If you decide on the bus option that others have mentioned here is their
website www.sena.it
Your seats are reserved and it drops you within the city walls at
Piazza Gramsci.
