Might have spelled that wrong, oops.
Anyway, I know this is a Europe group but as I've mostly traveled to
Europe and never been to S. America, I was wondering what you guys think
of Rio. I'm thinking of planning a trip.
Has anyone here been there? For someone that really loves Europe (Western
and Eastern), what are the chances of me liking Rio?
Thanks!
Marcus

You will love Rio for sure. Beatiful scenery, beaches, walk, visits,
night-life if desired, etc, etc.

On Fri, 07 Mar 2003 07:18:16 GMT, in rec.travel.europe, "dajaxon"
arranged some electrons, so they looked like this :
... try Bahia - much better for brazilain culture
The colourful kind that looks good in postcards and tourism brochures, maybe.
For the rest, forget it.

Where are we going to and why are we in a handbasket ?

Still, in many ways, the northeast is real Brazil. Salvador maybe
somewhat depressing, and indeed the Northeast as a whole. But if you want
to see what Brazil is truly about, it probably is a must.

Excuse me ?? "Real Brazil" in only *one* region ? No way !
For tourists looking for the "postcard country", coconut trees and [a certain kind of]
music/dance, possibly, not for those who are really interested in the country and in the
people...

I was thinking about the people, not the postcards... Nordeste remains
the true heartland. The say is that real Brazil goes from Rio up north.
To the South, they are all hard-working Germans. OK, or Italians...
Although in truth, places such as Ilheus, Aracaju, Maceio or Recife
(which I know best of the lot) are more real. Got to read Jorge Amado.
I undertand you read Portuguese, don't you?
Not just watching Gabriela, Cravo e Canela for the sake of Sonia Braga's
breasts. :-)
And even for these that made it into movies. (I was thinking of Dona
Flor e seus Dois Maridos in particular, the book is actually so much
more delightful.)
(Actually, your typical Nordestina female is nowhere near in the same
league as her. OK, breast might not be fine though.)
Then one should go to the sertao. Caruaru, Nova Jerusalem, places such
as these.
Of course there is more to Brazil, and sure, Rio is not a bad place to
start. But it's going to be damn hard in Rio to venture out of the
touridt path.
(Still, I have been toying with the idea of buying an apartment on
Copacabana. While prices are good. Oh well.)
