I have read a lot on the internet but am starting to get overwhelmed! Just
wondering if others have some recommendations. Basically, my wife and I want
to see castles (especially by ocean), lakes, and in general, natural scenery
and historic places (such as battlefields, etc), and we only have 5 days to
do it. We will be starting in Edinburgh. We will have a car (we really enjoy
scenic drives). Any advice is appreciated!
thanks!

There are many possibilities. Here's one suggestion-
Head towards Mallaig, via Fort William- overnight enroute if you want to
spread things out- it's a pleasant drive, you might want to take your
time. Ferry to Skye- day or two there, then take bridge back to
mainland, head up to Inverness, then head back to Edinburgh. I won't
bore you with the possible routes- you'll obviously have to research
that. This itinerary will take in at least a couple of castles by sea or
loch, and a couple of famous battlegrounds. The scenery is wonderful. If
possible, divide the driving between you. If you could be flexible, it's
possible by public transport, and affords some incredible train
journeys. On the way out of Edinburgh, try and stop in my birth place
Stirling, which is always worth a visit. It would be a very full 5 days,
but it _is_ possible, and enjoyable if you like that kind of pace.

Base it around driving up to Skye via the west coast, that will give
you good screnery and you can then pick out castles etc along the way.
