Default Recommendation for affordable hotel in Rome in city center

Will be going to Rome next year. Does anyone have any recommendations
for something in the affordable range? I would like something that is
within easy walking distance or near a bus or metro stop)of the
sights--one of my party has a bum leg and elderly.

Just taking a gander of the map, it looks like something in the
Quirinal or Esquiline Hills would be an ideal location--I've read that
the area around the train station is a bit on the iffy side.

Does anyone have any favorite hotels or locations to stay at that they
would not mind sharing?

Thanbks in advance.

I stayed in the trastevere last time I was in Rome. Loads of restaurants and there were enough locals around to make you think you were in Italy. We walked to all the sites and would stay there again. The hotel was the cisterna and cost us 65 GBP a night in June. Again another place I would recommend. It is a train and a tram from the airport.

You first need to define what amenities you require (such as
private bathroom, elevator, etc.) and what you definition of
"affordable" is. How much are you willing to pay and what do you
want to get for it?

Want a private bathroom with shower for 3 women. Don't need AC--April
should not be too hot yet. Need an elevator for my Mom who has a bum
leg. A very important thing is it must be clean--no roaches, no
fleas, no spiders--with daily maid-service.

Since I hate the idea of killing our vacation budget on accomodations,
I was thinking of something under $120/person/night.

Would you have some recommendations?

I'll check it out. Is it close to the metro or a bus? (My Mom has a
bum knee and I want her to "make it" to the sights.

Thanks.

I don't have any specific recommendations for you, but you're in
a price range where I'm sure you can find something clean in a
decent convenient neighborhood.

I'm sure you'll get several recommendations soon.

The Cisterna has Ensuite rooms with showers, AC, maid service, very nice breakfast, friendly staff and is a short walk from a tram stop. Rome's underground is limited. The area has a good atmosphere with plenty of outdoor restaurants. I have no idea if it has a 3 bed room. It also has a lift.

The metro is very limited but the buses will get you everywhere.
But with one person with a walking problem you should take taxis. Being
split 3 ways in will be cheap and alot easier.
There will be alot of walking at some sites like the
Colosseum-Palatine-Forum and the Vatican Museum-St. Peter's. So you
should make getting there from the hotel and back as easy as possible
IMO.

The most convenient location, and one that has lots of reasonably priced
hotels, is the Campo dei Fiori/former Jewish Ghetto/Piazza Navone area.
From this area you can really walk to almost every part of central Rome,
and it is also well-served by busses and trams. My favorite hotel in the
area is the Arenula, which is well within your price range but doesn't
have an elevator. However, there are many others in this area.

one thing to be alert to is elevators -- my elderly mother found the
endless flights of stairs in budget hotels very difficult. Remember
first floor is at least a flight up. so if you have gimpy members of
your party, be sure to get a place with an elevator.

A few years ago I spent five days in Rome with elderly parents who had
limited stamina for walking as a basic means of transportation. We tried
the bus and subway a couple of times, but those were a struggle too with
crowding, so we were mostly using taxis to get around. The third day, I
noticed a brochure for a hop-on/hop-off bus. For the next two days we used
two different tours to get around for the day and it worked out very well.
They were reasonably priced and kept fairly close to their schedules. They
both provided some commentary between stops, and their itineraries were
somewhat different which provided some variety. I found this link for bus
tours of Rome, three of which are the hop-on/off type.
http://www.romeguide.it/FILES/visite/bus_tour.html .
Buon viaggio!

As you know, I too like the Arenula (I went there on your
recommendation), but not only does it not have an elevator, but
I'm afraid it's well over her price range. I paid $126.77 for two
people last January, and that was when the exchange rate was more
favorable.

They seem to have lowered the price. When I went there this past July,
they charged us 68 euros for a single and 120 for a triple. They quoted
93 for a double. Maybe to attract the ever-rarer American tourist?

Thanks. That's good to hear.

But for her, even 120 Euro for a triple comes to around
$132--more than her budget.
