Recommendation > 5 days end of May ??
I'd like to take a 5-day trip over Memorial Day weekend with my
girlfiend. We're in NYC. We don't have a big budget. We like walking / site seeing. Don't need fancy hotels, restaurants, etc. Recommendations? |

With only 5 days for a trip, I'd want to minimise travel-time as much as possible. Also, it's tempting to consider eastern Europe over western since it's generally cheaper but in such a short vacation, I'd be more inclined to look out for bargain airfare to anywhere, since 5 days' worth of cheap hotel/food/drink prices might not be enough to compensate for a not-so-cheap airfare. Paris is nice at that time of year. Pick up the "Rick Steves"
guidebook for specifics on afforable hotels & food. There's a place on the corner of Rue Cler that's IIRC well under $200/night...closer to $125 or so...and a generally good location. -hh |

"Also, it's tempting to consider eastern Europe over western since it's
generally cheaper" That's true in a 2-month trip, but in a 5-day trip the greater cost of flying to Eastern Europe as opposed to Western Europe is probably as much or more than the difference in prices on the ground. For two travellers to a Western European city who share an inexpensive hotel room, use public transportation to get around, and don't eat at three-star restaurants, it doesn't have to cost a lot at all. "but in such a short vacation, I'd be more inclined to look out for bargain airfare to anywhere, since 5 days' worth of cheap hotel/food/drink prices might not be enough to compensate for a not-so-cheap airfare." The cheapest cities to fly to are usually London, Paris, Amsterdam, or Frankfurt. If you want a city that is very walkable, and that has a lot of "sights", Paris or Rome are probably your best choices. |

Paris, but also try the Côte d'Azur. Fly to Marseille, rent a car,
drive East. Drive POLITELY, France ain't mid-town. Have fun. |

To those who replied with real consideration, thank you for your input.
Eastern Europe is appealing, but I've never been and 5 days seems inadequate. I think Iceman's take is good. Unfortunately, I don't see (right now) too many deals. |

One last suggestion, Consider that you and your spouse are going to be
together for the rest of your lives, you are going to have children and raise them together. There will be good times and bad times. Don't scrimp, spend the money and GO THERE where ever "there" is. The memory of your honeymoon will be with you forever and your wife will always remember that you did it for "her" |
