I visited Colditz 3 weeks ago whilst on a tramp round Saxony.
You really don't need a travel company to get you there. Ryanair fly from
Stansted to Leipzig Altenburg for as little as 32 return. From Leipzig Hbf
(train station) there's a direct bus every hour or so which takes about an
hour to get to Colditz. A three hour guided tour of the Castle costs 5
Euros. There are not many steps to climb once inside the castle, but it is a
gentle climb up from the village centre to the entrance gate.

The Colditz story

was made by prisoners and should still be there in a depot just under the
roof of the castle ??

My uncle was there for several years and didn't have to pay anything at all
for board or lodging.

AFAIR the UK government docked money from the salaries that POWs were owed
because they had received free board and lodgings.

I think the original sailplane disappeared some time ago. However, there is
a mock-up of it suspended from the ceiling in one of the rooms in the Escape
Museum. It's about 10 feet long. The original plane (made from wooden strips
and bedsheets) was never actually used to make an escape attempt.
