Unless you work for yourself or are an EMT or work in an emergency
room, I have never seen a job that wasn't repititious and boring.
Even police officers will tell you that 90 percent of their arrests
are very nearly identical with only rarely something out of the
ordinary happening.

As for "normal" every day types of jobs - yes they are exceedingly,
horrifically boring.

Me? when a job gets boring to me I seek another.

I get 3 months of semi-vacation per year. I run a tutoring business.
No one wants to get tutored over the summer, so I only work about 10
hours a week for 3 months. Next year, I might just forgo work
altogether and spend my summer in Costa Rica.

And I'm not the only self-employed person out there.

I suspect, Michael, that you are in a different category of
employee than "no spam" - a category where one "negotiates"
a contract, rather than lining up to be hired for a "job".
I've been with my present employer for close to thirty
years, but back when I was "job-hopping", it was rare to get
more than ONE week's vacation, one's first year on a job
(and even then, only after a full year of service). After
two years you were given two weeks, after five (if you were
lucky) you got three weeks (but not all at one time), and
just maybe, after ten years or more, if the firm considered
you a really valuable employee, you could "negotiate" four
weeks.

I think times have changed somewhat in the interim, but with
the reluctance to provide employee medical insurance
(particularly dependent coverage), and to pay for overtime,
they appear to be changing back again - to pre-WW2 standards!

Ha! Typical American woman my ass!!! I'm the primary breadwinner in my
marriage (have been for over three years), just as my mom supported my
dad when he was finishing college. Maybe you need to re-evaluate the
type of women you were drawn to.

Anywho, I get four weeks' + a week off between Christmas and New
Year's. I work at a small four-year college and nonprofits typically
are generous with the bennies, since the wages often aren't that
great. When I worked in London, my coworkers got something like six
weeks vacay.

Probably a typical American fat ass. Huge, gigantic, really wide.

So every woman in your family marries deadbeats. Maybe your
entire family should re-evaluate preferences.

    > Maybe you need to re-evaluate the type of women you were drawn to.

I am not married. Sleep with American women, yes, but marry them
and be tied to their highly materialistic and never-ending demands, no.

Maybe yours were -- I think you need to remember that despite what you may
think, you DON'T speak for everyone. Some of us have jobs other than
waitressing.

During my 30 years in the work world I have done everything from being
a legal assistant for a personal injury law attorney to creating
websites, fundraising and grant writing for non-profit organizations,
working in a pet shop, working in a travel related capacity, worked in
a box office for a theatre and a zillion others. In each case, they
were all repetitive to some extent, and eventually boring. You simply
cannot do the same kind of thing day in and day out, over and over and
over without it becoming tedious. Very, very few jobs are not
repetitious. If you can prove me wrong, then I would welcome hearing
about it.

When I was in the military, that 30 days counted all 7 days in a week.
Has this changed?

Thanks for the tipoff. I did start getting this when he first began
tossing the ad hominem attacks. The funny thing is he's now posted reams
of repitious hyperbole and still has not been able to come up with one
actual cite.....

When I replied to you I forgot this thing was cross posted and you were
probably reading in a group he doesn't frequent.

He has never provided one single cite to back up any of his claims. I
sincerly doubt if he's going to start now. And of course he is an authority
on damn near everything. <snort> I just don't read his crap anymore and I
don't generally read replies to him either.

You'll get a whole lot farther and be a lot less frustrated if you go out in
the yard and have the discussion with a tree.

No way !!!

After working for many companies in the IT industry here in the UK in
the last 15 years (and being laid off twice), heres my attitude :-

1. Family is at the top of important list, WAY above work.
2. Employers look after themselves, not you.
3. You need to look after your own interests in work.
4. You can work 24/7 and an employer will still shaft you if it makes
financial sense.
5. NEVER put work above your personal life.
6. Limit the amount you do for free.
Guess thats my move to the US cancelled then :-)

I think I have a pretty good view of UK workers from films.

I think the film, "I'm Alright, Jack" typifies the UK worker.
