Default Railpass/ticket query

A: I know how much both Austrian and German Rail passes cost and I can
look up prices for assorted combinations of trips on single tickets.

B: what I can't seem to find is an answer to what happens when my two
longest stretches start well into Germany and end up well into Austria
and vice versa.

which
C: makes me wonder whether I want to buy passes, as I usually do when
I'm just traveling within Germany, even if they are more convenient.

The problem with buying tickets as I go along is that I sometimes start
in pretty small towns and I have learned that there's not always someone
there to buy a ticket FROM. I'd like to put all the tickets on a credit
card if I buy them individually so I don't have to carry around QUITE so
much cash.

Could I buy tickets for any of my inside-Austria stretches before I get
there, for instance? My first overnight stop in Austria IS one of those
very small places, and the Salzburg stop is a mad chase between trains.

Salzburg is the ticket point between the Austrian and German rail systems so
your German railpass is valid to/from Salzburg.

Sure! You can get tickets for travel within Austria (or other European
countries) at German rail counters (and vice versa). You can either get one
ticket for the whole Germany into Austria trip, or use a railpass to get to
Salzburg (Salzburg is considered both a German and Austrian city rail-wise,
so your German pass will cover travel into Salzburg), and then use a one-way
ticket (that you can buy in Germany anytime before you travel) to cover the
remainder of the journey. If worst comes to worst, you can also purchase a
ticket onboard the train, though usually at additional charge.

That's what I was really wondering most about, as I'll have time to buy multiple tickets in FRA or my first stop, but then the next three stretches are to and between small stations, and, as I said, I'd like to be able to use a credit card as much as possible so I needn't carry so much cash or constantly be on the lookout for a Geldautomat.

That part I did know, but I wasn't planning on stopping there; it's
the one city in Austria I HAVE visited before 8-)
