Default quiet spot on Tenerife or Lanzarote

my husband and I are in the happy position of being able to spend 6-8
weeks in the Canaries from late October. The idea is to find an
apartment and settle down in the sun. We went to Tenerife in January
on a cheapie and ended up in Puerto de la Cruz; not that we didn't
have a good time there, but we would prefer the sunnier side! We had a
day out to the south side and ended up at La Caleta which was very
pleasant but seems to be only huge hotels.

we're a bit old for clubbing :-) and seek a quiet spot near a beach. I
suspect this means being in the Playa de Las Americas area but
preferably not right next door to a disco!

can anyone recommend suitable areas/apartments; we can get a car if
required but might prefer not being too dependent on it. We don't need
luxury accommodation, just a room and simple cooking facilities.

thanks
Helen

Tenerife does not really have natural beaches. The artificial ones are
not quiet. Why did you rule out the other Canary Islands?

I don't know what country you are in, but don't most European tour
companies offer long stays in their winter brochures? For very good
prices from what I have seen. At least in Brtitsh tour companies
brochures. Cosmos. Airtours.

There aren't many beaches in the south, but where there are its noisey and
crowded or the beach is very artificial and actually quite a distance from
the sea (i.e. you have to clamber over rocks to get to the sea put there to
stop the sand washing away).

I suggest an apartment/villa near La Caleta/Playa Pariaso/Fanabe would be
the quietest.

We actually didn't miss the beach in Tenerife, but we stayed at an excellent
all-inc hotel (we stayed next to Playa Paraiso, the centre of which is to be
avoided). We reckon the better hotels have better pools in Tenerife
compared to the rest of the Canaries, because of the lack of beach.

To be honest from what you have told me Costa Teguise in Lanzarote sounds
more up your street. Nice big beach, plenty of nice little
villas/apartments to Rent and noise if you want it (but it won't slap you in
the face). Its breezy, not as Sunny as the South side of Tenerife, but more
sunny than Puerto de La Cruz in my memories.

Oh and we hated PDLA and the Costa Adeje part of PDLA (Costa Adeje is the
coastline of Adeje, so its not actually a place). The real Costa Adeje, up
from PDLA, was class though...... even if the beach is in short supply.

There is a web site in Spanish (can't remember where) that has pictures of
ALL the beaches on Tenerife. If you use babelfish (on alta vista) and do a
search using the Spanish translation, you'll probably find it.

Hope this helps.

probably not for Canaries, as they are winter sun destination.

If you want to stay on Tenerife, you could investigate El Medano, near
the southern tip of the island, not very far from the airport (not
sure if it suffers from any aircraft noise). It's a small attractive
resort with a large sandy beach, and popular with windsurfers. It
enjoys a good sunshine record. Play de las Americas and Los
Christianos are about 10-12 miles to the northwest. As well as the
long beach which stretches out of the resort there is a small
sheltered cove at Playa la Tejita, under the 'red rock', about 10-15
minutes walk away, and popular with naturists. There are apartments
available in the resort. www.canariandreams.com might be able to help.
They also offer naturist accommodation nearby - La Jaquita.

You suggested Lanzorote as a possibility. I saw Costa Teguise
mentioned in a previous reply - it's pleasant, but still fairly
developed and with a lot of big hotels. You could look at the village
and large beach at Famara at the north of the island. You can get
accommodation in the village or outside town, directly behind the
beach. Again, a search through the Canarian Dreams website will
provide some options. If you want a remote clothes-optional village on
the coast, Mala, not far from Costa Teguise might be worth trying.
There are plenty of different places to rent from small apartments to
luxury detached villas with their own swimming pools. There is one
supermarket and three restaurants. The village is open to all without
restriction, but you would probably find it useful to have a car. (Let
me know off-line if you want details of accommodation here, also see
Canarian Dreams.)

Finally, if you want the beach life, have you considered
Fuerteventura? - it has the finest beaches in the Canaries. El Cotillo
on the north west coast is a scruffy, but charming fishing village,
with Caribbean-like beaches at the lagoons, just to the north of the
village. There's plenty of good value accommodation and also lots of
places to eat (not surprisingly, it has a reputation for fish!). The
main resort of Corralejo is about 20 minutes away on a regular bus
service. Just outside Corralejo, you'll find the spectacular dunes
beaches and on the southeast coast of the island, about 25 miles of
continuous sand, in a mainly remote setting.

Let me know if you want more info.

PS I'm envious of you having 6-8 autumn/winter weeks to spend in the
Canaries!
