Default Quick hols in UK

I'd like to have a break and get away for a couple of days. I was
thinking of either Cornwall or Lake District.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend somewhere for a single
person to stay in either location. I will have my car so access
should be no problem. I would prefer a small clean comfortable place
that is value for money (ie it doesn't necessarily have to be the
cheapest).

I find B&Bs are usually quite difficult to book ahead. Many will not
take an advanced booking for a single person in the hope they will
later get a couple instead. One landlady once told me, when a single
male she doesn't know tries to book in advance, she always says she
is fully booked.

Rather than going on spec and having to take whatever's available,
regardless of suitability, it would be better if I could have
somewhere nice already arranged. I will probably go mid week so
hopefully can avoid the weekend bookings.

Your observation may apply in a few cases were owners have no single rooms
but does not apply to everyone. We have no singles but have a single
occupancy rate and never refuse anyone if we have a room vacant.

Suggest you look on www.visitbritain.com for B&Bs with single rooms. Most you
can book on line these days. You should have no problem with these B&Bs as
they all have to meet a quality standard.

Hi David,

You are quite correct that my observations do not apply to everyone.
Perhaps I have just been unlucky a few times.

Years ago I used to do a lot of B&Bing around England. At that time I
just arrived on the doorstep looking for a room for the night or for a
couple of nights. More often than not, I found that single rooms
either didn't exist or were already taken. However, the owners had
an opportunity to meet me and, since I was certain business, I was
frequently offered a double room at single rate. If they were full,
they would suggest friends or other B&Bs that I could try which was
very useful.

The problem was more with telephoning in advance when the owners still
had a very good chance of letting a room as a double. They would
either say they were full (which of course they might have been) or
only offer me a room at a double rate. On occasions I did still call
on some that originally aid they were full and got a room. They may
have had cancellations but I have always doubted it.

Nowadays I am less keen to chase around late in the evening looking
for any sort of bed. So I prefer to book somewhere reputable, clean
and comfortable in advance.

Your bungalow looks stunning in a superb setting. I used to go to
Basingstoke very regularly on business so have had opportunities to
visit many of the sites you mention. Judging by the pictures, anyone
else who might be visiting in the area could be very comfortable
staying with you.

Thanks for your information

Derek
