Default Prague to Berlin by train or by bus or by ?

Or perhaps by boat?? No, I know better! :) Seriously though, will fly to
Prague and then will need to get to Berlin in the next two weeks. I'd rather go
by land, to see a bit of Eastern Europe. Would like a chance to stop at least
once along the way. How long is the journey? What are my options? Many
thanks for your insights! I hope this info will be of use to others as well.

Best,

JC

I recall a post a few years ago from a man who was planning to fly to
Paris and make his way to Prague from there on rollerblades. I don't
think we ever heard back from him about how it went.

There was a Dutch guy shown on TV two nights ago, who tried to run up
Mont Blanc wearing nothing but spikes, a flimsy pair of shorts and a
fur lined hat. Somewhere near the summit he got into freezing fog and
was persuaded to give up by the camera crew AFAIR. I have never seen
anybody who looked so cold. His body was covered in a film of ice.

Trains run every two hours and take 4 h 46 min from Praha-Holesovice to
Berlin. (Take metro C to Holesovice from the city centre.)

Some of these trains originate at Praha hl.n. (central station) right in
the city centre, but not all of them do.
Use http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/e to get detailed schedules.

A single open ticket is CZK 1419 ($61) and is valid two months including
as many stopovers as you like. Seat reservation is available (at a small
extra fee) but not compulsory.

There is a bus service between Prague and Berlin, run by Eurolines. See
the schedule at http://www.bei.cz/jizdnirady/t276.htm. Single fare is
CZK 900; don't know how they handle stopovers.

And the train pretty much follows the river at least as far as the German
border, so that you see what you would see in a boat, only quicker. A
couple years back, during the floods, you could have combined your options.

They call this region "Central Europe". What about a stopover in
Dresden?

This option does exist. Needs a few days and no regular service, only by
cruise ships. And most of these are **** or ***** = expensive.

route: Prague (Moldau/Vltava) - Magdeburg (Elbe -> Mittellandkanal) -
Potsdam (Havel) - Berlin

Best option is the train. A normal (international) train ticket will be
valid 2 months and allows stops as long as they are en route and towards
your final destination.
DB timetable
http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/english.html
From: Prague
To: Berlin
There are 2-hourly EC trains which need 4:46. Single ticket is EUR 51,80.

Bus is less frequent (not even daily). Tough cheaper. And some strange
arrival times (2am at Berlin ZOB).
http://berlinlinienbus.de/ftp/prag.pdf
The bus stops only in Teplice - but a ticket is anway only valid for the
booked trip. The bus fellows also not the scenic route along the Elbe river.

Recommended stop: Dresden

Those Cold War terms seem to hang around. Very few here are old
enough to remember when that area was called "Central Europe".
