practicing spanish
 

I will be traveling to spain this summer, and I want to practice my
spanish. Does anyone have any advice as to how to find a language
exchange partner? I honestly have no idea where to look.

Shop, eat, and drink in your town's neighborhood where Spanish
speaking people tend to congregate (or is that too obvious?).

Also, speak Spanish with every person who you think might understand
you (or is that too obvious?). Hispanics are everywhere.

During my recent European jaunts, I found 'em (without looking) in
London, Paris, and Rome. Some of them were tourists.

I do theoretically have a lot of opportunities to speak spanish since
I live in a heavily dominican neighborhood in New York. But it isn't
that easy just to start a conversation with a random person. The
local grocers think I am nuts when I say something to them in spanish.
I was hoping there was some language exchange resource that I don't
know about which could match me up with spanish speakers who want to
practice their english.

Trying not to have a conversation with a random person in spain seems
to me impossible. There's no need to worry about this point. The most
important universities for languages are in Salamanca and Granada -
maybe you start there, on the streets you'll also find many
announcements of people searching a conversation partner for their
studies to do it more concentrated.

Maybe the one I walked through after visiting Sugar Hill. Spoke with
many people, merchants and just New Yorkers on the street. I felt no
animosity.

How odd. Maybe they thought I was but I was unaware of it.

Last week we dropt into a Yucatec restaurant where the proprietor
presumed I'm Hispanic. Maybe he speaks English, maybe not, I don't know.

The Mexican who visited my home today and I converse in a strange
hodgepodge that's neither English, Spanish, Spanglish, nor Pocho.

On the way home this evening, I asked where to find some items from
fellow Hispanics and the exchange with the cashier was in both languages.

Rare is the day I speak only English.

where do you live, Chuck? do you have craigslist or some other online area
to post an ad? I think it shouldn't be too hard, but then I live in SF and
craigslist is huge here.
