We want to travel in Europe by Dec 23th to 31th. Here is the plan;
- arrive at Rome - spend 2 days
- drive up to Alpes to a city like Milano ot Torino (any suggestion?) stay 3
days
- come back to Rome and spend 2 days.
We would appreciate to see;
- Alpes!
- major attractions like Vatican
- technological, automotive or military museums (no interest in art)
I would love to hear suggestions. Attractions. Cheap hotels well located,
etc...
TIA.

Are you sure you want to drive??? Trains would be cheaper, easier, and
probably faster too.
I live in Milan, and would not recommend more than a day for this
place. Rome on the other hand deserves a week in itself.

But you cant see the Alps from Rome !
(or from Milan if the weather is typical for that time of year)
What about fly or train Rome to Venice, pickup a hire car after a day in
Venice, drive towards Milan taking diversions into the Alps and staying
overnight in Verona, spend a part day and maybe night in Milan, drop off the
hire car, then fly/train back to Rome ???
Christmas day in the Alps should be nice and peaceful. But check public
transport availability around that time.

http://www.museoscienza.org/english/leonardo/ in Milan
Lots of exhibits but very little written explanations and what there is is
only in Italian.
(Dont get yourself too excited about the Leonardo specific bits)
allow 2 - 5 hours depending on you level of interest.

Too complicated. Fly Rome Venice, one day in Venice without car, then
hire car to go to the Alps, 2 days in the Alps
then fly back to Rome.

I have two comments for you:
1. In any big city (Rome, Milano, or Torino) a car will be a
handicap, not an asset. Traffic is horrendous and parking is
well-nigh impossible. Since the car will be useful to you only
for travelling between cities, consider taking the train instead.
It will be cheaper, faster, and more convenient.
2. However you travel between the cities, why not do it only
once? Fly to Rome, go to Milano or Torino, and fly home from
Milano. You'll save a lot of time not making the trip twice.

Strange place. It thinks Milano is a region and didn't give any clear
way to find a place near the airport.
And no hotels in Urbino.

Trains are certainly an option.
I am a bit deceived of what I heard about Milan so far... any other more
interesting city close to the Alps? Major non-art-oriented museums?

I prefer Turin and the surrounding area to Milan.
There's a Museum of Egyptology in Turin. The monastery where they made
"the Name of the Rose" is about a one hour drive away. The food is
good everywhere.

I'm staying at the First Hotel at the Milan airport for one night

Yes and I do have a car and, probably, a hotel reservation for Urbino.
I was responding to the web site that was being pushed. I didn't find
