Planet Earth - IS it worth it?
 

Bunch of dirt, some rocks, lots of water (most of it you can't even drink or
swim in). Too many bugs. A few rude French people, and folks who are even
more rude who speak nastily about all French people. SARS, militant religious
fundamentalists, high-cholesterol food, toxic waste dumps, know-it-all Usenet
posters, and an odd collection of ancient rocks grouped on an English
countryside. Tell me, is Planet Earth worth it?

How can you say that?

AFAIK _all_ of the inhabitants of Planet Earth eventually die. Clearly a
very dangerous place. No one interested in their personal safety should
consider visiting there.

Well, it depends upon what you like to do. Maybe if you told us
what things you normally like to do when you visit a planet we could
be a bit more helpful.

As a general guide:

1) Don't try to do the whole planet on one visit. Avoid those
"9 planets in 8 days" kinda trips. You'll never really get to
know any of them.

2) Try to learn a few of the languages of the planet. Just a few
words. "please, thank you" those kind of things. Don't just walk
up and hollar "Do you speak Vulcan"?

3) Read a bit about the planet before you go. It helps if you are
familiar with what is around and available. The Lonely Planet is
a good start. Don't let the title fool you.

4) You can try to dress like the locals, but really everything
about you is just gonna scream "I'm an alien".

5) Whatever you do, don't bother eating at a place called "MacDonalds"
you can get that at home.

6) Rick Steves. You either love 'em or hate 'em. Some folks fault
him for not having yet visited enough planets.

7) Don't bother bringing your Vulcan Express card. No one takes those.

Ahh, but that applies only to locals. Despite occasional rumours, there
are _no_ documented cases of any visitor to the planet suffering death or
serious injury.
