Default Places to see near Barcelona?

We are two couples who will spend a weekend together in Barcelona before
joining a larger group of friends.
The plan is to use this weekend to see something different than Barcelona
(we will be spending a lot of time there later).
So, I need suggestions as to where we should go.
We were planning to see Andorra, but have decided not to because of the
great number of people that will be there in august.

Any other suggestions?

Get the train to Girona. The old town is gorgeous - you could spend a
lovely day exploring all the steep little mediaeval alleys and streets
up on the cathedral hill, if you like that sort of thing (I do).

Another possibility is to visit Montserrat, less than an hour away from
Barcelona. The name literally means "serrated mountain" and as you drive up
to Montserrat you will notice that the face of the mountain looks as if
someone had "serrated" it. Montserrat sits on a mountain that is probably
one of the highest points in the area and so the panorama is awesome. The
main attraction is the monastery, with the boys choir and the Black Madonna.
There is also a small museum with surprisingly has a good collection of
paintings. You can also ride the funicular or the cable car to the top for
some great views.

This is a great suggestion. The topography is like something out of a
cartoon. You can also hike to the top following the stations of the cross,
but if it's hot...beware!
Figueres is also a 100km trip from Barcelona, and Dali's hometown. The
museum/house is wonderful.

I went to the Dali museum in Figueres a month ago. Everyone I knew
who had been had come back and told me how wonderful, how exciting it
was. I'm afraid I disagree - it's a collection of awful old tat;
boring, uninspiring talentless rubbish. Your taste may of course
vary, in fact judging by my friends I'm very much in the minority

By the way, if you DO go to Figueres, here's a couple of hard-won
tips:

1. Be extremely careful when getting from the railway station to the
museum; we had a detailed street map of the town and still got
totally lost, finally walking right round the outskirts of town
before we found the centre!

2. The earlier you get to the Dali museum, the less you'll have to
queue. We got there at about 11am and had to queue an hour and a
quarter in hot sunshine.

Vic might be an option.

The monastery at Montserrat or Poblet.
