Does anyone know if the presence of machinegun-toting army guards
beneath the Eiffel Towel in Paris has deterred pickpockets from plying
their trade?

More to the point, has their presence deterred terrorists
from blowing tourists up, instead of merely picking pockets?

I would doubt it. Someone with an automatic weapon is not likely to
want to get close enough to a suspect to deter picking of pockets. The
idea is to shoot dangerous folks at a distance. If they get close to
you then you are at risk even with the weapon and, perhaps, from the
weapon. In fact, they may assist the pickpockets by distracting the marks.

yes, now the pickpockets wait in the tower lift compartments and the second floor.

Don't know, but I do know the machine guns deterred me from *visiting* the
Effel Tower.

What about all the automatic weapons carried by security in airports?

Guards like that are mostly for show, no matter where you see them.

No, but it makes people think so.

Hi,
I'd be willing to bet they're national police and they're carrying the
FAMAS assault rifle... since it fires an intermediate cartridge and is
select fire it's technically an assault rifle not a machinegun (which
would fire a full size rifle cartridge).

At Easter we were in Rennes and visited the Centre Colombier (spelling?)
. Whilst waiting for the missus I sat down in a nice couch and watched
the world go by. Twice a group of 1 old/bored policeman and 2
young/bored "gun-that-fires-loads-of-bullets" ** toting soldiers passed
by and they were no ad for the French - a shoe shine would not have gone
astray. More to the point I didn't see their need - they looked
incongruous and I fear what would happen if they had to use their weapons...
** I don't know if it was a machine gun or an assault rifle... :-)

A machine gun is capable of firing more than one round for every
press of the trigger. It fires a round usually fired in rifles, or even
rounds of .5" diameter (50 cal.).
An assault rifle - a term often abused by liberals in the USA - is
capable of firing more than one round for every press of the trigger.
It fires a round substantially less powerful than a typical rifle, but
still far more powerful than a typical pistol.
A submachine gun is capable of firing more than one round for every
press of the trigger. It fires a round usually fired in pistols.
I'll bet the guards carry submachine guns, as they are much easier
to carry. There is no possibility that those weapons were machine
guns, as they are simply too big and heavy to carry around.
Pete

Then what distinguishes it from a machine gun?
