Default PAYG ISPs in France?

Well, I'd hoped three days in Brittany next week might be Internet-free,
but it turns out one of our party really needs occasional access to email.

So:

Can anyone recommend and give a dial-up number for a pay-as-you-go ISP in
France? (I mean a number where one dials up without an account and is then
asked for a credit card, etc.)

Failing that, what, and where, are the chances of finding public Internet
access in a small town? (I'm afraid I am not really familiar with rural
France at all.)

Wanadoo may still offer a free internet dial-up acount. I still have one
from a couple of years ago, which is still active, their "Accès Libre". It
helps to read French well enough to follow the pages, but you can run them
through a translation program such as at www.faganfinder.com/tranlate. If
they don't have free accounts anymore, they do offer very inexpensive ones,
for as low as 5 euros a month for 5 hours, enough to do plenty of e-mail.

Poked around in Wanadoo (www.wanadoo.fr) and found the route to free
internet is Accueil Wanadoo > S'abonner > Bas Débit > Accès Libre

Just do a web mail to his account. Lots of internet cafes, and internet
points everywhere now.

The free.fr ISP has a dialup access offer with no charge outside of the
local phone communication.

I once signed up to an ISP called free-fai or some such (Google will
supply the exact name) but never used it as there was a WiFi point
where I was staying.

Wi-Fi hotspots are on the rise in France, and can be found in all
sorts of places. Internet cafés, in contrast, are disappearing. The
French are finally starting to buy more PCs, only twenty years after
the rest of the developed world did so.

Wifi access is available in many hotels.
In the Paris district Mc Donalds hamburger restaurants have free wifi
points, they are going to extend the service to other towns.

Thanks, all.

Unfortunately free.fr insists on sending me a connection kit via
snailmail, which isn't much help!

Free Wanadoo gets me to download a file called KitWanadoo.exe which won't
run! And paid-for Wanadoo, if I understand it correctly, insists on a
12-month contract. (Or does "Engagement: 12 mois" just mean the price is
good for 12 months?)

So, sounds like it may be an Internet cafe or taking my chances with
Wi-Fi, after all.

How small? Most middlin' sized towns will have some sort of public access. I
live way out in the country & I can think of two within a 20 minute drive.
Where will you be exactly?

All you really need is the hardware; installing the software they
provide may actually cause more problems than it solves.

However, getting ISPs to explain what parameters to use when setting
up connections via standard software (such as Windows XP, in place of
their brain-dead, home-baked "kits") can be problematic.

I've never used any software from Wanadoo, as I need a reliable,
stable computer, and I won't have that after installing their garbage.
But there are quirks if you do it yourself. For example, Wanadoo
redefines the IP addresses of their mail servers for their own
subscribers, as opposed to the rest of the Net, and it took a long
time for me to discover that in endless e-mails. I was finally able
to tweak my DNS server to handle Wanadoo's ill-advised
misconfiguration.

Plonéour-Lanvern - "pas des hotspots ici" as one Web page succinctly puts
it. ;) But I've found some Orange hotspots in a number of nearby towns
which should even work with my existing BT Wi-Fi account, so all may be
well.

Well, if s/he just needs occasional access to email, an Internet cafe would
seem to be the answer. I'm not familiar with small town Brittany, but, even
it there aren't formal Internet cafes, there should be places that will sell
you time for a nominal fee. In small-town Italy, I used the
Internet-connected computer in a florist and in somebody's private house.
Found these by following small signs or asking at the tourist office.
