I noticed while researching travel to the Ukraine that a valid
passport is required that does not expire within 6 months.
I am planning a trip to Helsinki and Tallin in December but my
passport expires in January '05. Do these countries have similar
requirements? I haven't found anything online to suggest that is the
case, but I have very little time to research. Any help is
appreciated.

Almost all countries have this same requirement and it is likely that
your airline might not let you board is you do not have that long left
on your passport as well.

If you're concerned, renew your passport now, before your trip.

No, only stupid restrictive countries have this rule.
If every country had this rule a 6 month to go passport
would be useless, which would be a bit of a bugger for
someone with a one year passport (and yes they do exist)

The USA, and I assume most countries, allow you to renew your
passport early. You aren't the first person to run into this situation.
Besides, what happens if you need to stay a little longer for some
reason? It does happen.

Many countries require that you have at least 6 months left on your
passport. These requirements are not always easy to find in writing,
and may be only sporadically enforced. But better safe than sorry --
to be SURE of avoiding a real mess of red tape, renew your passport
before leaving on your trip. Why have this question hanging over your
head, when you can buy peace of mind for a few dollars?

There are various agreements, and a couple of treaties, waiving the
six-months rule. E.g., Exchange of notes constituting an agreement
between the United States and Trinidad and Tobago regarding extended
validity of passports issued by Trinidad and Tobago, Port of Spain, 12
Nov. 1969, 763 UNTS 9, No. 10907 (1971).
As you said, it can be hard to pin down the more informal agreements
on the subject. But not with respect to the USA. Here's the list,
which does not include Ukraine:
