Default Re: Paris museums (re)opening in 2007 & Christmas 2006 exhibitions

Yesterday, the 22 November 2006 the National museum of the Legion of
Honour (no website) re-opened after 3 years of refurbishment, from
wednesdays to sundays and 13:00 to 18:00.
I forgot it...! Outside the french and foreign orders collection, the
main interest of the museum is his interesting "post"-Napoleon III
decoration (1878), one of the rare preserved in Paris, created after
tthe Commune fire of 1871 wich destroyed the original decor of this
typically end-18th.neo-classical parisian mansion.

I've seen 3 of the 4 actual Rembrandt exhibitions in Paris. The 4
parisians collections (National Library (BNF), Louvre, Petit Palais
(370 pieces), Custodia Foundation (not included the few pieces in
provincial museums)) holds nearly 100 % of the Rembrandts engravings,
with their differents states, in particular the BNF (90 %), thanks to
the acquisition of an important collection by Louis XVI, a
few-knowned... dutch-flemish art amateur, in 1784.
All are interesting IMO. The Louvre holds and shows mainly drawings,
the 3 others their engravings, notably the BNF site Richelieu with the
main pieces (100 florints piece, 3 cross, Ecce Homo, etc...) and most
of their different states completed by the 2 others exhib.

The 3 ancien art exhibitions are interesting as well :

Afghan national museum treasures (which got out of the country for the
1st time) at muse Guimet,

Sassanides parthes with an exceptionnal gathering of the pieces of US
(MET), V & A, Louvre, Hermitage, Berlin, Iran museums, etc.. in silver
and gold (nearly all...!), coins, sculptures, mosaics, cameos,
textiles, glass, etc...

and Thracian gold :

As well as portraits 1770-1830 at the Grand Palais with MANY large
formats of the main english, french, german and spanish portraitists in
particular

Default Re: Paris museums (re)opening in 2007 & Christmas 2006 exhibitions

(copy of recent answer to Andrew Nightingale)

There is no big fireworks in Paris for Xmas and New Eve. Only the crowd
drinking bottles and shooting mini-fireworks on the Champs Elysees.

Some streets have Xmas decorations like the Champs Elysees or some
departement stores like Galeries La Fayette - Printemps at Opera. See :

http://en.parisinfo.com/rub8282.html
http://www.paris.fr/portail/Economie...portlet_id=824

For exhibitions and newly opened or re-opened museums make a search
with "meurgues christmas exhibitions" in rec.travel europe (or buy the
very cheap "Officiel des spectacles" or "Pariscope" booklets).

like :
- muse du Petit Palais,
- muse du Quai Branly,
- for the "very"... curious see the Coronelli globes at the National
Library (Tolbiac site) the largest ancient ones (17th c. ) with more
than 4 m of diameter, then take the new very nice footbridge over the
Seine to the Cinemathque in Bercy park with the museum + exhib. :
german expressionist cinema (in this matter the collection is one of
the richest).

Corrections :
- contrarily to what I said, the muse de la Legion d'Honneur doesn't
allow anymore the access to the 18th c. hotel de Salm and its XIXth c.
decors... (except once a year for the "journes du patrimoine :
"heritage days" in September).
- due to a problem with the curators of the Hermitage museum of St
Petersburg all loans to foreign museums are stopped (the impressive
cycle of the History of Psyche presented at the Maurice Denis
exhibition of muse d'Orsay escaped...), so their 14 items are
unfortunately not presented at the exhibition "Sassanide Persia" of the
muse Cernusci. :+(

I dont understand !

Here :
http://www.maison-de-la-france.com/R...&EditoID=71235

they pretend that there are fireworks at the Champs de Mars (Eiffel
tower).... but I've never heard of it before and can't find a
confirmation elsewhere notably on the URL link given...
Do you know a website about it ?

They don't talk of fireworks there :
http://en.parisinfo.com/rub8282.html
http://en.parisinfo.com/rub8283.html&id_article=23674
See notably : the grande parade . I don't know what it worth...,
Father Christmas with his horse-drawn sleigh... at the 3rd ardt mairie
or without it at Bercy village (but with ski and sleigh slopes) or in
departement stores, the 25 m pinetree and magic forest under and
on the 1st level of the Eiffel tower, the big wheel of Concorde square,
the crches of Notre Dame ?, rue des vertus 3e, 40 rue La

Theses links give :

Disneyland Paris, etc...), and shops (Maison de l'Alsace : Champs
Elyses) http://en.parisinfo.com/rub8292.html

- outdoor ice skating (Hotel de Ville (1050 m), Tour Montparnasse

No, all I know is what I have *seen*! I was in the Champs Elyses 31st Dec 2004 with a
friend and there were fireworks!! The theme that year was "Olympics 2012", by the way...
which Paris lost to London.

Olympics.

Nope, there are fireworks every year. It's just that someone has to drag me, kicking and
screaming, out of my cosy, warm flat, to go watch them (and freeze!) in the Champs
Elyses...

You should have stood outside Mixi's open window and let the hot tropical McD
pickled gherkin scented air from his flat waft over you

It will be globally warmed rain this year.

You can't feel it, but in Paris... you can see it turn...

That'll be an occasion to see as well the HUGE, impressive, perfumed
(lavander, tea etc... in the balls)... (quasi symetrical in fact,
despite the photos) and very poetical sculpture of the brazilian
contemporary artist Ernesto Neto at the Pantheon until December 31 (or
30 ? : check).
