Hi Jack,
I "translated" the museum name... : it is mentionned at :
- 2 February 2006 : "City of Paris modern arts museum" :
www.mam.paris.fr ;

I visit ALL the main Paris exhibitions ! Every month I make a list...
(1)
As far as US art is concerned, the exhibitions Los Angeles, Morphosis
and David Smith have recently finished and those of the american
artists and the Louvre, James Turrell (Sept. 19 & 25) and Dan Flavin
(Oct. 8) are ending soon. Rauschenberg exhibition begins October 11th.

I just came back from the decorative arts museum. There are more period
rooms than before notably of the 18th and 19th century. For the reason
that it was choosen to not move some fragile existing ones (art dco
and art nouveau) the chronology is not totally respected for those last
ones. But that's not so important. The collection of furnitures is
sometimes impressive notably for late 18th to early 20th century. The
museography is contemporaneous and stylish.

(1) tes vous intress par cette liste et celle des 19 principaux
muses ouverts en nocturne et leurs horaires ?

The museum reopened on February 2 after a three year renovation.
It houses now "" Dan Flavin - A retrospective """ and
"""Cerith Wyn Evans (ARC) : in which something happens all over again
for the very first time"""

Yes, the building structure itself was renovated from 1997 to January
1st 2000 and the museum consequently closed.

Then the 5th level shortly closed May 2 2005 and reopened from June 15
2005 to march 6 2006 for a thematic exhibition (Big Bang) with a
smaller choice of the entire collection gathered on a single level,
then closed for works until its final reopening January 1st 2007 in its
chronological original form for the modern collection. The first 5
rooms nevertheless reopened from June 22 to October 22 2006 for a
temporary exhibitions of pieces from 7 donations from 1905 to 1960
(Cordier, Pevsner, Braque, Laurens, Rouault, Kemeny and Delaunay).
The 4 th level closed for works from June 12 2005 to April 5 2006, then
reopened as well for a thematic exhibition (Le mouvement des images)
until January 29 2006 with an even smaller choice of the entire
collection but additional videos and films, on a single level. Then it
will shortly close at its turn until its final reopening April 2 2007
in its original form for the contemporary collection.

I can't remember the reason of these works which interrupted again for
2 years the normal presentation of the collection from May 2 2005 to
April 2 2007, only 5 years after the former closing of nearly 3 years.
I think it's for security improvements (the construction rules could
have been modified meanwhile?).

    > Beaubourg was disappointing when I went this July.

Yes, not only the museum is partially closed for renovation but a tiny
portion of the collection is shown because of the nature of the
exhibition "Le mouvement des images". The normal presentation (see
April 2 2007) is much complete even if the 14000 m of the museum can
only present a small percentage of its collection of 57684 pieces and
5209 artists from 94 countries including 5604 paintings, 2623
sculptures (3597 with 3D objects), 17599 drawings (22919 with archi &
design), 2262 prints, 17188 photos (17282 with archi), 1043 videos
(1538 with all recordings), 1073 movies, 1737 objects of design,
etc..., the most important in Europe, included in quality, and probably
the 2nd only to the MOMA.

http://www.centrepompidou.fr/Pompido...enDocument&L=2

then choose "the museum collection on line", then make a choice by
artists, countries, types, etc... with "recherche multicritres" : are
particularly well... represented for ex. : Rouault (730 paintings !),
Kandinsky, Brancusi, Kupka, Picasso, Larionov, Gontcharova, Arp,
Severini, Magnelli, Matisse, Braque, Delaunay, Leger, Gris, Ernst,
Miro, Malevitch, Calder, Poliakoff, etc...
Some main foreign artists (active after 1907 : Klimt or Munch paintings
are at Orsay museum) are nevertheless represented with only 1 or 2...
paintings but generally of good quality, in particular Mondrian, Nolde,
Macke, Russolo, Carra, Rothko, Kokoschka, Kirchner, Grosz, Schad,
Rosenquist, Lichtenstein, Sutherland, etc..., but all the main artists
(according to french sensibility) seem represented except Franz Marc,
Schiele, Hooper and Depero IMO (the 6 Dali paintings are all anterior
to 1931 because the french state was expecting... a "gift" (dation)
that the death of Franco put in jeopardy :+) ).

Just a last... word... :
In fact, the best way to check the collection is with the "recherche
multicritre" and by choice of type of piece (oeuvre) :
"paintings" or "sculptures+3D objects+objects" or "objects of design"
or "prints (estampes)+drawings(dessins)", etc...

Duffy, Chagall, Giacometti, Lipchitz, Gonzalez, Pevsner, Picabia,
Laurens, Soutines, Dubuffet, Alechinsky (1), Hantai (1), Marquet,
Derain, Masson, Duchamp, Breton or Fautrier, for ex. are particularly
well represented as well, which is of course normal for the french
ones. (Sorry, I could not resist to complete !)...
Many have average representation : Van Dongen, Magritte, Lempicka,
Matta, Lam, Dali, Bacon, Jawlenski, Tanguy, Beckman, Baselitz, Richter,
etc..., etc... or for the US, Pollock, Warhol, Oldenburg, Francis,
Newman, etc...
(1) great artists injustly unknown... abroad ! See their pieces...

It's a nice presentation and looks fairly comprehensive.

Wonder if they still sell those expensive CD-ROMs with similar content?

Looks like the Louvre has also put a lot of images online.

So Pompidou may follow what the Louvre did, which is to prohibit
picture-taking, which is a shame because part of the appeal is how
they're presented and the architectural complement to the pieces.

So there are museums run by the city and those run by the nation.

But doesn't the budget for either essentially come from the same source,
income and TVA from across the nation?

Or does the city rely mostly on property taxes?

I tried to use the Paris Museum Pass at the Petit-Palais but that wasn't
included because it was part of the different govt. entity.

The multiple choice possibilities notably by date or country added to
the type of piece or artist is particularly usefull.

    > Wonder if they still sell those expensive CD-ROMs with similar content?

No idea.

    > Looks like the Louvre has also put a lot of images online.

http://www.louvre.fr/llv/oeuvres/bdd...bmLocale=fr_FR
at least for the pieces exposed
Orsay hasn't put its collection online so you still need to go to
http://www.culture.gouv.fr/documenta...de/fr/pres.htm
or
http://www.photo.rmn.fr
and limit the results to Orsay museum

    > So Pompidou may follow what the Louvre did, which is to prohibit

The prohibition of images in the online collection of the national
museum of modern art comes in fact from the copyrights owners like the
Braque (French) or Man Ray (US) families (reproduction non autorise)
not from the museum itself. The museum has to buy these rights. That's
why some images are indicated in course of negociation (en attente
d'autorisation). Those with "pas d'image" are free of copyright but the
museum has simply not yet put the photographies online. The Louvre has
not this problem since the heirs of the copyrights of pieces created
before 1848 are, like their creators, dead since a long time... :+)

Yes, like in many european capitals.

The budgets of the 14 Paris municipal museums come only from the city
of Paris budget, voted and spent independently from the State, and
which not only includes local property taxes (in part or totality ?) or
(in minority) some automatic state "dotations" (for "fonctionnement"
notably) like in every french communes. In France, income and VAT are
not local but, yes, state taxes.

The permanent collections of the 14 museums of the city of Paris are
free of charge except the muse Galliera (fashion collection of the
city of Paris open for temporary exhibitions only) and the Catacombes,
if I remember well... So for 12 you don't need to show the Paris museum
pass to get in.
http://www.paris.fr/portail/Culture/...t?page_id=4693
That's why the number of free museums and monuments of this pass has
been reduced from about 70 to 60.
http://www.parismuseumpass.fr
Nevertheless, in the municipal museums, the special exhibitions are not
free of charge and not included in the pass neither, except for the
muse Galliera. But I'm not sure that they were included before.
