I was planning to Fly to Paris for a few days then either rent a car or
fly or take a train to Biarritz/San Sebastian/Bilbao and then continue
to Madrid for a few days before flying home. Should I drive or are the
distances such that a train or plane would be best? Drive time? I would
be doing it in early July, too. Tourist hell? Too hot? I live in Miami
so it can't be that hot?

hi,
i don't know how to start, let's see. Going from Biarritz to Bilbao doesn't
take you no more than 2 hours. Then, if you want to go to Madrid from Bilbao
it will take you about 3.30 hours by highway.
It is important to know when are you going to do the trip because, if you
will do it on Sunday night (i'm talking about going from biarritz to san
sebastian), you will have problems because, on sunday, lorries are not
allowed to drive in the Basque region, so, there are a lot of them waiting
for the monday at both sides of the highway. That's why theres is too much
traffic.
You must spend more than one day in San Sebastian, it's very beautiful. And I
strongly recomend you to go to Santander (Cantabria). It's 45 minutes from
Bilbao and is one of the most beautiful cities in spain. Bilbao just have
the Guggenheim, but it's a grey city. I don't like it.
If i could help you in something more, just write.

Thanks much. I wonder how much to rent a car from Biarritz and drop off
in Madrid? Might use that as the driving time and fly or take train
from Paris to Biarritz. Is Pamplona on the way to Madrid from Bilbao?

Pamplona is not exactly on the way from Bilbao to Madrid, but isn't too
far. Pamplona is a modern city and it's very beautiful but if you don't go
during the San Fermin is a normal city.
If you don't like art, i wouldn't recomend you to go to Bilbao, for you it's
better to go from San Sebastian to Pamplona and then Madrid.
I don't know exactly how many days are you going to take to go from Biarritz
to MAdrid, but, if you tell me i could make you a itinerary. There are other
cities where you can enjoy, such as Segovia or Burgos.
And, of course, I recomend you my city, Santander.(jejeje)

Train connections from Paris to Madrid do require a change in Irún
besides the overnighter. What do you plan for *La* Côte Basque? Just
transiting? Beach holiday? Sightseeing?
