Paris Gare d'Est Hotel?
My "older" aunt and uncle are going to fly into Paris (landing
around noon) . They want to stay in Paris overnight before taking the train to Basel the next morning. This train leaves from Gare d'Est in the 10th. They would like to stay in a hotel (probably a 3 star) within walking distance of the station, thus making it easier in the morning. Is this a good idea?. I'm sure during the day, they will want to walk around. I've been fortunate to have been to Paris many times for both business and leisure, and don't think I've ever had any reason to be in this area except possibly to change within the station. Should I try to find them a hotel by the station or, should I suggest that they find a hotel further south near a Metro entrance of a line that goes directly into Gare d'Est. Thanks Liz |

Thanks Liz My take is that the area surrounding the Gare d'Est and Gare du Nord is pretty crumby and not an appropriate area for two older people to stroll around in if they want to see a bit more than the hotel room. It would be far better to find a three star in an area of Paris where they could enjoy the afternoon and evening in a more salubrious atmosphere and just take a taxi to the station in the morning -- not all that expensive. If they can afford a 3 star hotel they can afford a taxi. There are a lot of hustlers in the area of these stations and certainly nothing of interest. I say that once having booked a hotel near the station and was sorry that I had. I didn't feel completely comfortable walking around at night. Why stay there when you can stay in an area with lots to see and a better crowd? |

Probably. The first time we arrived in Paris for a year (65-66) we stayed at the Hotel Amiot across the street from the Gare de l'Est train station. We arrived in late November with a dog and a 5 yr old kid and were treated royally by the hotel and the nearby restaurants. The area further afield is "sleezy" but a lot of European tour buses let their people off in the rue Lafayette. I would not have any problem staying close (a block) to the Gare de L'Est train station, lots of restaurants and the area is a bit more animated than around Gare du Nord or St. Lazare. Of course it is nearly 40 years since we stayed in the Amiot, but it is on the web and at 65 euros cheap for Paris. I saw the photo at http://www.123france.com/123/fr/hotel.php?id_hot=801 They change the décor a bit in 40 years! Earl |

Very nice and reasonable too. After dark, there appeared to be mostly lurkers on the streets. Probably harmless, but not the usual Paris crowd. But this couple has an afternoon and evening, enough time to visit say, the Notre Dame area and more and it's a quick ride in a taxi to and from the station. |

Thanks Liz > Gare de l'est is not the fancier place for tourists in Paris, busy during the day, not really fancy at night without being really a dangerous area. But I agree with the other posters : tell your Aunt and Uncle the must take a taxi back to the hotel at night and every thing will be perfect. 1.
