Paris daytrip advice please
We'll be in Paris the last two weeks of April next year. I want to rent a
car & drive into the countryside to show my wife rural Europe. I'd LOVE to
find some of those quaint towns and their nearby castles, but don't know
where to look. I saw several while watching the Tour de France, but can't
locate the actual route.
What is within a couple hour leisurely drive from Paris that might fit the
bill (And maybe go through some hilly terrain)?
Thanks folks!

Two hours from Paris ? You can visit Vaux-le-Vicomte, but it's not exactly a castle, it's
a palais (and well worth the visit, too). Of course, there is Pierrefonds...
Maybe you could visit the Loire for a couple of days; there is a "route", one castle after
another. I particularly recommend Chenonceaux, Azay-le-Rideau and Ussé.
Oh well, they are *all* beautiful !

Mantes-la-Jolie, perhaps? Better might be to try Senlis -- small, but

I'd give Amboise a few points for quaint.

The Loire Valley might be a little far for a day-trip drive, but that's
where you'll find wonderful quaint towns and chateaux. The TGV train
departs from, if I recall correctly, Gare de Lyons and is a relatively short
ride at very high speed to Tours, which is a medium-sized city in the heart
of the Loire. You can rent a car right at the station and spend a wonderful
day driving around.

and it is admitedly much more so after 5p.m. I just happen to love the Bon
Laboureur, perhaps the fact that the owner remembered me with a "Monsieur,
I know you!" while I was having coffee after dinner helped.

Rather than renting a car to tour for the day and return to PAris the same day,
I would suggest doing an overnight. Paris is so much more expensive than
outlying areas that the savings on accommodation would more than pay for the
car rental. Reims is very nice, about 1 1/2 hour drive from Paris. The
countryside was very scenic when we did in in mid May a few years ago.

Re: Paris daytrip advice please
Your best guide for driving is the Michelin Green guides...the Paris book
has daytrips from the city and the Ile de France guide covers the region
around Paris. Or you could travel down to the Loire Valley (a seperate
guide), the quintessential "France with castles". You will need the driving
maps as well, Try to get your car outside of Paris, though, as the traffic
in the capital is NOT for beginners!
For info on Le Tour de France (not LA Tour), go to
